e-Miniature Aircraft Furion - Razor - Ion-X > Has anyone thought of using a shorter tail-boom?.......

It seems that no one uses rotor blades longer than 690mm or 700mm for the Ion-X. I'm guessing that the optional 31.5" boom can safely support 700mm blades.

So why not use a shorter boom? You'd reduce the weight of the heli by a couple ounces, shorten the moment of the heli around the main shaft, and reduce the rotational inertia of the tail gearbox. It might make it a tad quicker overall.

Anyone think it's worth a try?

Hmmm...that's a good thought but I suspect the longer boom was used specifically. Is the boom included with your Ion 33" long?

It's the 33" boom. The Ion-X kits come with the 33.

But a 31.5" (or even shorter, if MA makes it) would be a very reasonable change to make.

I was under the impression that the 33" boom will allow for 710s and 105s...and I think that's the max. you can do. I am running 680s on the Ion now and plan to try 700s. That's only 10mm shorter vs. 1 1/2" shorter boom. I haven't measured, but I don't think that's going to guarantee clearance.

"With the 33 inch boom on the ION it is possible to run 740 mm blades and 105 mm tail blades if the motor would turn them."

Got the above response from one of the MA team members. So it seems you're right...should be able to use the shorter boom but a 700/105 combo is cutting it very close.

But remember that was with the Expert/Extreme rotor head. Doesn't the Ion use the Tempest 3D rotor head??

If so, the Tempest rotor head is 17mm longer per side. So comparatively, 700mm blades on an Expert/Extreme is actually 717mm on an Ion. If your barely clearing 700/105 on the Expert your gonna hit with 700/105 with the short boom on an Ion.

The Ion uses the Extreme rotor head. The boom is 33". All my protoypes used 31.5" booms, which will allow you to run 700mm mains and 95mm tails without problems. The 33" boom will allow you to use even longer blades, although in practice no one really does as 700mm blades are pretty much optimum for this heli.

The longer boom will also prove to be a help for those wanting to gear down and carry a load or those that want to use the Tempest head. The weight difference between the two would be very minimal...perhaps 0.25 ounces.

Just remember, if you shorten the boom, then the tail becomes less effective!

The further away the force is stopping the body reacting to torque, the less power you require to hold the tail in place.
