Aerobatic 3D Contest > Sideways Rolls?

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if people can roll the heli while flying fast sideways? I've seen lots of fast forward and backward rolling as well as stationary rolls. So how come I never see any body do it this way? I think it would look pretty cool.

It can, and it is. Sideways rolls are a level 5 or 6 maneuver. A lot of people jump from hovering to piro flips, bypassing a lot of flying skills.

As I understand it, a side ways roll is when you're flying sideways and do an elevator flip? Is that the story? Or have I got it wrong?

Thanks Chopper, can you explain just how it is done? This 3D stuff is beyond my current skill level but I am curious. Let's say you are going left to right tail in and give left aileron you have to follow with collective until inverted but how do you keep the left to right movement going and how do you maintain height? My brain is hurting just trying to think of the stick coordination.

It is all in the collective. You need to add negative colective before you get inverted. This pushes the heli right. Hold collective thru the inverted, switch to positive when the disk is on the right side and so on. Put a different way, in a normal roll, the collective will be added in the 12:00 and 6:00 positions. In a traveling roll, the imputs will be more like 2:00 and 8:00. You adjust your speed and altitude by adjusting your timing and amplitude of the collective.

Try some hovering rolls at altitude. I bet you do traveling rolls before you do stationary rolls :-)

Thanks again Chopper. I'll try to work it out in the sim, it now seems simple enough. Do you know of any videos that might have somebody doing one? I know that ColeopTer is starting to gather a video archive, maybe I can find one there.

Video of sideways rolls

I have a clip that I did at IRCHA last year that has what you want to see. The clip is in the photo movie section " My first mpeg" and it's on the third page.

Thanks Millibee,
I've just downloaded it. The resolution makes it's a little hard to tell what I'm looking at but I'll watch it a couple of times to be sure. Does it come near the end of the clip? Near the end I see what appears to be backward rolling circles and I think the sideways roll. Am I right? Great video!! Do you know who the pilot was? Thanks again.

The sideways rolls begin at 1:40 and it is best viewed in the full screen mode so that you can see it better. I'm the pilot and my name is Vernon Barrett.

Well Vernon that is some fancy flying you were doing, very impressive. Maybe it's me but I don't see what I thought I'd be seeing in my head. It looks like you were doing a large circle while flipping nose over tail. In my mind I am picturing the helli going straight sideways nose or tail in and rolling on it's side over and over kind of like a log rolling along the ground. Still I suspect it's me not being able to clearly see what you are doing. It's a great video to add to my collection, thanks.

If 'roll' means revolving on the same axis as the direction of travel, and 'sideways' means the heli travels sideways, then a sideways roll means flying sideways and applying elevator.

If 'roll' means using aileron, then I can see how you'd get the 'rolling log' idea, but I don't think that's the usual definition.

There's a maneuver called a tumbleweed (I think some call it a 'moonslide') where you fly forward and apply full back elevator and do a backflip while travelling forward in a straight line. So what you described might be a sideways tumbleweed.

Far as I know, there isn't a dictionary of maneuvers... Lots of people use different words to describe the same tricks. The same words are sometimes used differently in descriptions of different maneuvers. It can be hard to communicate without waving your hands around to demonstrate.

Wow, I can see how fast things get lost in the translation. The closest I guess would be the sideways travelling rolling flips. Man that's too many words. I just thought flying sideways while doing continuos aileron rolls would be called sideways rolls. I realize the demands on the engine would be great brecause of the additional drag. I also see how it would be difficult to roll smoothly like a log but if you could it would sure look amazing.
