Tonight I spent a couple of hours on the sim trying to do some piroetting flips and got no where. All I ended up with was a whole heap of craziness that looked like the heli was in lockout and drunk.

Anyone got some tips that would help me get going on this?

This was covered a few posts down. There's some good info in that post.

There was also someone who posted an animated picture of pirouetting maneuvers with an animated tx showing stick movements.

That should be more than enough info.

slow it down

Dont try and whip them off with the rudder. Find a nice rotation rate then try it. If you get your rate too fast its harder to do then nice and clean looks more like choas instead of flip

Read and re-read those previous posts. The things that helped me:

-Focus on the rotor disk and make sure it looks the same as
a regular flip

-Notice how you pump the collective negative when inverted to keep the same altitude for a regular flip. Do the same for a piroflip

-I started doing piroetting loops. Doing the loop gave me the extra time to become comfortable with and understand the changing orientations. You can work on one half at a time this way too. Make sure you can hit the proper position inverted on the way up then just hold inverted. Shortening up the loop to a flip was pretty easy once you figure out how to make it go through the proper positions. I felt the same way when I just moved the sticks in the proper manner (sort of). It went too fast to understand and it just looked like a mess and I would fall out of it every so often. Definitely not a controlled maneuver.

-Stare at that animated pic for a long time

-Be persistent and keep practicing

I started out doing clockwise pirouetting loops. Then I read somewhere that counterclockwise unloads the disk (easier). Duh! So I started practicing the other way. Now I can sorta do piroflips in both directions! Also, I started just trying to get the heli to move the right way without realizing what the sticks were doing. I'm just now starting to see how the stirring motion translates into the proper heli movements. Finally made my first attempts with the real thing too! Took it up high and just did the same thing as I did on the sim. Still not totally in control, but the fear factor is definitely lower! Hope that helps

SECRET TO PIROETTING FLIPS

WELL, ITS NOT A SECRET BUT IT WORKED FOR ME.
I STARTED WITH A CONTINUOS SLOW PIROET TO THE RIGHT.
BREAKING THE MANEUVER UP INTO FOUR.
1)WITH THE NOSE OF THE HELICOPTER FORWARD APPLY
FORWARD ELEVATOR. NOW THE HELICOPTER IS NOSE DOWN
WITH THE RIGHT SIDE FACING YOU.
2)APPLY RIGHT AILERON. NOW THE HELICOPTER IS INVERTED
TAIL INTO YOU.
3)APPLY UP ELEVATOR. NOW THE HELICOPTERS TAIL IS POINTING DOWN AND THE LEFT SIDE FACING YOU.
4)APPLY LEFT AILERON. NOW THE HELICOPTER IS BACK
WHERE YOU STARTING.

I CAN NOT TAKE THE CREDIT FOR THIS LESSON. CURTIS YOUNG
BLOOD EXPLAINS THIS VERY WELL IN HIS FIRST 3D LESSON
VIDEO TAPE. GOOD LUCK AND KEPT PRACTICING, IT TOOK
ME ABOUT THREE MONTHS, NOW ITS SECOND HAT. JASON
KRAUS SUGGEST TO DO THE PIROET TO THE LEFT.

Had another crack at it after reading some of the tips here, getting better, can do two or three fairly close, but fairly inconsistently, however I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now!

Thanks a lot.

Using my "flyng pencil" your direction fail at step two unless you reverse the pyro. If you don't the heli ends up right side up nose in after step two.

YES, YOUR CORRECT I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING LEFT
PIROETS ALSO. IF PIROETTING TO THE RIGHT IT IS
DOWN ELEVATOR, LEFT AILERON, UP ELEVATOR AND RIGHT
AILERON. THANK YOU I REALIZED THAT MISTAKE AT THE FIELD
LAST NIGHT. NO CRASHES.
