Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Woops, servo reverse is not a good idea.....

A couple of weeks ago I started my new Heli for the first time. I was a bit nevous as it was the first time for this heli, and 3 months since I last flew my old heli (R.I.P.)

I decided to start it on the drive at home, just to make sure that it would start before packing all the gear into the car and making my way to the field.

My neighbour joined me as I checked everything over, and started her up. No problem, so I decided to get a little headspeed up to make sure there were not killer vibrations. No problem there either, but I did notice that the rudder was reversed.

So, throttle back to idle, I accessed the menus on my JR-66MAX and cycled through to the servo reverse menu. The default channel was the throttle, 'I DON'T WANT TO REVERSE THAT ONE' I thought to myself, but, in my nerves, instead of pressing the 'skip' button to get to the rudder channel, yep, you guessed it, I pressed '+'.

OH MY GAWD......

My poor little Irvine 36 hit the roof, and my NEXUS began a merry pirouette accross my drive. With the heading hold switched off, she was spinning furiously whilst the head speed soared (0 deg pitch + full throttle).

Trying to think logically (not easy in this situation) I thought, go full stick on the throttle to bring it back to idle......

OH MY GAWD........

Now I had a rapidly airborne NEXUS, still spinning, but with the engine dieing (having gone to +10 deg pitch at full stick). So I brought it back to ground, but again with the engine racing.

Only one sensible thing to do, reverse the channel. Luckly the NEXUS wasn't advancing towards us, but it was nearing the edge of my drive and if it got into the grass, it would have toppled over and we'd be picking pieces of carbon blades out of our chins.

So, 'calm down' I told myself, I accessed the menus again and cycled through to the servo reverse, got to the throttle, and hit that '+' button.

, that's better.

So lesson learned BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN REVERSING TX CHANNELS.

Never reverse servos when the heli is running - it's too easy to make a mistake

Having said that, guess who, as a raw novice, started up the heli without switching on either the Tx or Rx

Tend to do that when trouble shooting. On, off, on, off, on, off, off start up heli - whoops

sounds like what happened to my raptor, the first time I started up. I had some experience hovering a nexus, but pretty much I was an r.c. everything novice. I build my raptor, and go outside to make sure everything is good. start it up, set it down, get it up in the air, maybe about a foot. suddenly the engines revs full speed, and at that time I did not have the skills to simply fly it out, or really to do anything but instantly crash it. I didn't reverse the channel, but the carb screw ( that holds the linkage on the carb) was loose. so basically, the engine opened itself to full. took a few starts, tying the heli down ( which is a BAD idea) to figure it out. now I only fly e-helis which suddenly come on also..

On the subject of servo reversing
a friend of mine a while ago got a new heli and put his own reciver in it but had the pitch reversed so the heli spooled up but stayed on the ground, the more throttle went on othe harder it stayed on the ground so he dropped the throttle but the heli now shot up at a rate of knots with the engine going to idle until the head speed decayed and the heli was on the way down fast ! so he increased the throttle to slow the decent!!!

No chance, the heli just went to full power whith full neg pitch WHAM straight into the ground, Since this we all realised that if something is reversed you dont stand a chance!
I always spool up and move the swash left right foward and back, rudder left then right in the hope i will spot any mistake i may have made.

I always check servo directions as soon as I turn the electrics on. You can move the cyclic around and look at the swashplate, left tilts it to the left, forward tilts it forwards etc....On a raptor 30/50, put positive pitch in and the swash goes up, some heli's go the other way round. If you get into the habbit of checking this EVERYTIME you turn off/on the electrics you can do it in seconds and then you know it's right.
