I am needing some advice on good books for AutoCad 2004 and Inventor 7. In High school I was the first student to learn cad(it wasnt cause I was the best,I just had the worst hand writing on my pencil drawings. To bad the teacher we had didnt know anything about it so I have forgotten alot. I have a project that I am wanting to do. My roommate builds real airplanes for a hobby. The next project is a Curtis Sparrowhawk F9C. They only built 5 real ones. One is in a musuem and the other 4 are on the bottom of ocean still inside the Macon airship. He has been getting the plans from the National Archives. The problem is they are just copies and some of the lines, measurements are not legible and the copies are not to scale due to the copy process. Also there is some of detail sheets missing. The Sparrowhawk is a all metal airplane,so there will be lots of templates made. The patterns will used to make the parts using a trace a punch. I would like to be able to draw the parts in Autocad/Inventor and then print them out full size. I am looking at getting a plotter soon, but Kinkos here will have to do for now. I know this isnt a easy project for a newbie to do. I have been messing around in Inventor and done several simple items. So far just a computer desk,rc car motor, etc. Nothing of this caliber.
I know I can do it,I just need some knowledge in what commands do what, what order to do things.Books will be a big help. I am also taking drafting course at the local school this winter. My life has taken a turn and now its time to get into the CAD profession.I love the 3D modeling part of it.I am just in awe of some of the stuff I have seen. It makes it so much easier to understand what you are designing. Eventually I would like to be able to assemble the plane in Inventor. That way we could check all the parts and make sure they fit. Also is there a way in Inventor to draw a 3 view 2D drawing and then have it modeled in 3D?
Here's a Link to the real plane

copies - plans not to scale

I'd advise getting the plans scanned into a format your CAD tool can load - as a background, of sorts.
Trace the drawings on the screen (as a 2D task), and then re-scale *everything* to fit with the known dimensions. This will clean up the 'out of scale' copy issue. (I've done similar efforts with Microstation / IRASB)
Your next task will be to take the traced sketches, and turn them into 3D models. The method will depend on your CAD tool - ideally by importing the traced sketches.
I've started on a task to make a 3D model of an Me-262, based on purchased drawings / views. It can take a lot of time - I haven't got the 3D model completed yet. (Eventual goal is a flying r/c model).

Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.
