Tools and Field Equipment > Clip-on for perscription glasses recommendation

It is often cloudy during our warm weather. I have perscription regular glasses and perscription sunglasses. My sunglasses are too dark when it is cloudy. With my clear perscription glasses, my eyes are overwhelmed and I end up squinting and am unable to see much detail on the heli. It silouettes badly. Is there a recommended clip-on that I can use with my perscription glasses that will allow me to see some detail on my heli during the cloudy days? I'm not looking for style. I want something that won't scratch my glasses.

TIA,
Mike

Try going to the shop where you got you perscription glasses they should have a wide selection of clip ons. I got a pair from Wal-Mart for like $8.00 so that would be a thought also. I had and old pair of perscription glasses tinted recently, I went with a color and tint level that the folks at the eye shop suggested, I'm real happy with them.
Good luck in your quest,

I have prescription glasses as well and didn't want to spend the money for a new pair of prescription sunglasses. My glasses are rather irregularly shaped, and I couldn't find any polarized clipons that fit, so I found out that Pearl Vision has this kit they use to custom-make clipons for any glasses. You can pick the color and whether its polarized or not. The final cost was $34, but they fit perfectly and are not loose. They are a little delicate though, but once they're on your face that isn't a worry, its just taking them from the hard case they give you and putting them on. I personally love them.

Thanks for the replys. The polarized clip-ons I saw at Walmart were sort of dark, IMO. I was afraid they would be like my sunglasses. I was thinking that a slightly tinted clip-on would give the best contrast, but I could be wrong. Are you happy with the polarized and being able to see the heli's detail on a cloudy day?

Yes, I am quite happy with them. They're not too dark. The only time they are a little too dark is when I'm under the shelter at my club's heli site, sometimes I have to take them off to see what I'm doing, but only when the sun isn't really, really shining, which almost never happens out there. But outside under the sun in normal weather, its definitely not too dark. I've seen much darker sunglasses. I got brown colored ones, the glasses guy said they were best for increasing contrast. Because they are polarized they make LCDs look a little funny sometimes, but so far nothing has become invisible when I look at it straight on. I have to tilt my head to make LCDs disappear. It does make the screen on my 9C a bit less readable, but it is still useable. The polarization really helps with glare and stuff so its worth it.

Best color for contrast on cloudy days is brown. Serengetti uses a copper color. Some optical shops can copy the faux Serengetti tint to older glasses. Perhaps Pearle can as mentioned above. I might check this out as well. Also I use Zurichs some also, just throw them over your Rx glasses and fly.

Also, my regular prescription glasses are, what I lovingly refer to as "peril sensitive." Basically they are clear in normal light and in varying amounts of sunlight they variably get darker and darker. They never get dark enough to amount to "sunglasses", however, though they do help somewhat. I use those glasses with the clipons.

Guys:

On your advice I bought two pair of polarized Foster Grant Clip-ons from Fred Meyer. They had a model that fit my glasses well. I bought one in gray and another in a yellowish brown. The yellowish brown does provide better contrast. The also have a flip up mechanism to allow me to add/remove them during flight. This will be nice because we can have some huge dark fast moving clouds that billow off of the mountains.

Thanks again,
Mike

I would try a pair of yellow night driving clip-ons. I use them for driving in fog and misty conditions. They are also good for cloudy days.

It is something to do with enhanching the primary colours.

I paid about GB£10 for mine at an opticians.

Glasses

I have a pair of glasses with transition lenses in them.
When you go outside they turn dark. If it is cloudy they just darken a little. It all depends on how bright it is outside. Best glasses I have ever had.

Was tooling thru Walgreens last night and found a pair of amber lense sunglasses designed to fit over RX glasses. They look great too. I now use Zurichs for bright days and these for the overcast days.

I ended up buying some Yellow Clip-ons to go with my polarized clip-ons from a local Gun Shop. They are manufactured by Wiley-X (pretty big sunglasses distributer). They were $25. The clip-ons were a bit larger then my glasses. I put a couple of layers of masking tape on the clip-ons (to prevent scratching), traced the outline of my perscription glasses, and used my dremel saw to cut-to-fit. Of course, it has been perfectly clear and sunny for the last week, so I haven't been able to test them. I'm not complaining though.

I have been using a set of hook-ons from 3gsun for the past 4 years. They come with a lifetime warranty against damage- great deal IMO. Don't use their online ordering however, as last time I checked it was not secure. They were quite helpful on the phone however and I even faxed them a tracing of my perscription glasses so they could select a set of hook-ons that best matched my frames. http://www.3gsun.com/product-info.html

Zurichs work great and you can wear your glasses right under them. Now I can see when I fly.
