Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Hawk IV SH32 and CNC Turbo cooling fan

I have a Hawk IV that has been doing very well, but my OS32 gave out. I borrowed a friend's Megatech SH32. I put in my heli with the CNC turbo-cooling fan and now the fan bangs against the side of the shroud. I looked at the mounts coming off of the engines and the SH is offset where the OS mounts are in line with the shaft. How do I adjust for this? I hate to shave the fan or the motor carrier down that mounts in the Heli. I want to get another OS eventually. Did any one have the same type of problem? How did you fix it?

Possible solution

This was the engine being promoted by Heli-Proz awhile ago. They must have also discovered the many QC problems. Usually it is a good idea to test a product extensively before giving it a blanket public recommendation.

Obviously your SH engine has some machining issues if the mounting holes are not aligned properly with the mainshaft. I guess that is part of the "saving". (Sorry, just being a rectal pain) Also, you will probably find that the bearings and conrod will have a relatively short life span, the carburator needles may have a tendency to creep (making it hard to adjust) etc. These are all problems I have found when testing these engines (also with ASP, SC, Magnum, TT and a few others). Because of the lack of quality control purchasing one is like purchasing a lottery ticket, one never knows weather he will get the good one, the mediocre one or the real lemon. But one thing testing these have shown me, Any of my OS's always gives me at least 3 times the useful life any of these did (after having solved whatever QC prolem these engines had). So unless they could be purchased new for 1/3 the price (or less) they actually end up costing more!

Now off the soapbox and on to a solution:

If you could take a drill bit that is a little larger then the mounting holes on the engines mounting lugs and drill them slightly oversized. You may then be able to realign the engine so that the fan and gears all align properly. P.S. be sure to then use washers between the bolt heads and the engine mounting lugs.

I have an SC32 in my hawk IV and it is great so far, touch wood!
It is a copy of the OS and build quality is good. Made in China.
For £45 a shot it'll do me for now.

SC engines,

I tested 2 each SC32H and SC36H engines a few years ago. This was in an attemp to find an inexpensive engine to recommend for entry level flying.

This is what I found:
1 - Power about like the older OS28 FSH
2 - After a while, it became very hard to get the top end set properly because the main needle valves had a habit of "creeping" (turning by itself) inward (leaner) until I replaced the spring steel retainer of theirs with one from an OS.
3 - Ditto for the hover setting. After a while, it also became a chore to set for a consistant hover, because their idle needle would also "creep", sometimes inward, sometimes outward, until I would use threadlock to keep them in position.
4 - Non lasted more then 8 gallons of fuel before coming apart somewhere (the worst broke the con rod after only 3 gallons!!!).

Consequently I concluded that though the OS was twice the price, they lasted more then 3 times longer so really in the end they proved to be less expensive then the low priced SC. And then one would have the advantage of an engine that was much easier to set, kept its settings, was a lot more powerful and that when I went to resell it, I could. Nobody ever wanted to purchase my rebuilt SC units, even at our annual swap meets at a price of your equivalnet of 10 STG. ($25.00 Canadian). I always got good value on any of the OS engines I sold. The Canadian importer I was getting the SC's from even stopped doing importing them because of the number of engines he had to replace under warranty.

Buying one was like buying a lottery ticket, you didn't know if you were getting a dud or an OK unit.

So you can see why I obviously cannot recommend them.

Maybe the newer ones are improved, but I will not use my money any more to be a beta tester.

JPA2002 had an os32sxh on the for sale forum for $80 - he said it was like new - maybe you might check that out?
