Bergen clutch upgrade for X-Cell problems - SOLVED

I have an older X-Cell 30 with a Bergen clutch. This is the design with the shaft attached to the clutch (not uni-ball) and then that assembly mounted to the fan. I went to start the engine tonight and the shaft spun within the clutch. I took it all apart and sure enough the shaft that is supposed to be mated firmly to the clutch just spins in the hole. Anyone have an idea how to repair this? The clutch and shaft are still in good shape. Shaft is not bent. Can I use JB Weld or red Loctite to secure the shaft back to the clutch? Am I hosed and have to buy another clutch/shaft assembly? Thanks for your help.

By your description is seems that it is beyond repair. This might work if done properly. Go to some one that has a TIG not a MIG welder, if possible use straight argon instead of CO2/Argon mix. Clamp the shaft near the clutch with a pair of vise grips that have a piece of brass or copper in the jaws. Then do NOT use any rod, just flow the metal using the arc, small tacks in several locations should do it. Becareful not the heat the clutch or the shaft so wrap a wet shop towel around the clutch. After doing all of this you probably have spent enough to buy 2 clutches. Give Chris Bergen a call he might be able to help you www.bergenrc.com

Problem solved!

The terrific Bergen family is shipping me a new clutch that has the shaft pinned to prevent slipping. Not only have they improved the clutch, but they're sending it to me, free of charge. Now, that's a great birthday present! Debra, Larry and Chris, you folks are the best! Thank you.
