Threw a set screw - no clue where it came from...

I finished the Hawk IV kit tonight, and while trying to start I noticed 2 things....

1. It makes some nasty plastic grinding noises when I start it - if i push down all the way on the starting rod it makes less - yes I am sure the start shaft is engaging in the clutch fan - and I made sure the start shaft does not push all the way down onto the clutch fan (someone posted to do that - was that a mistake?).

I had a another HawkIV ARF before I crashed it and I don't remeber it grinding so bad to start. The new one does start ok though (same engine).

2. I threw a set screw - same kind that holds the hex adapter onto the start shaft - I have no clue where it came from. Any ideas? I would hate to have to tear this beauty all apart - I just finished putting it together.

Thanks!
Nick

Check:

Hex start adapter- is this the grinding?
Main shaft upper mast stopper
Slipper clutch
Tail drive shaft
Landing gear
Flybar weights
Flybar control arms

Other than this I can't think of other places with set screws, I have a Falcon SE but should be similar.

Also check the counter gear set screws!!!!

This is the gear right underneath the main gear. If that comes lose in flight, your done !

Yo Nick!

You don't want to know how many times I have rebuilt the Falcon. Or how many times I got it together only to notice an extra part in my work tray. Hmmm! where does that go? Or put it all together only to find the left over part requires me to split the frames again!. It is all part of the process, we are all vulnerable to the same issues. And when you think about it, it is a hoot anyway! Check out the new issue of MHT there is a good section on rebuilding.

>Hex start adapter- is this the grinding?

Yes it grinds when I start it, only if I don't push all the way down - it is NOT because the start shaft pin hasn't engaged into the fan - it has. I set the collar so it would not bottom out on the fan because someone indicated this could cause misalignment of the engine shaft/clutch.

>Main shaft upper mast stopper
BINGO!!!! BOTH SET SCREWS GONE!!!! CAN YOU SAY MY LOCKTITE SUCKSSSSS????????

good call whrlybrd!!!

Flew 2 tanks without them...

Does loctite get crappy with age? Mine is who knows how many years old. I'll get some new stuff tomorrow.

Not only that - I realized I put 12mm cap screws on the tail rotor hub ball bearings instead of 10mm - no wonder the tail was a little sloppy

loctite

I have noticed that the blue loctite seems to separate out if it sits for some time. I always roll the tube around and/or shake it vigorously before using it to make sure the components are well mixed. Of course, you can always use CA adhesive instead.

My locktite doesn't suck, I suck In the instructions they tell you to put those 2 set screws in but don't loctite them yet

Well I guess i should have put up a postit note to remind myself to loctite them later because it was never brought up again

Anyway - my fault, I didn't loctite them at all turns out...

Thanks again for helping me find that - not sure what would have happened if kept running it without those screws.

Nick,

I noted this on the Falcon also, concerning the don't locktite yet part. These things get better with each rebuild and flight, etc, that is what I personally like as I am a detail type. I am glad you found the source. As scotter stated shake the locktite up as it does settle also.

It appears that my Falcon is a bit noisy on starting also. I too did the things you did. I noted the roll pin on the start shaft has a tendency to slip to one side and not be symmetrical and this is a good thing to add to the preflight. Might need to be tapped to center. This created quite a noise once for me.

Don't get discouraged keep at it.

MHT is Model Helicopter Technique Magazine. It is the best source out there in a magazine.

Keep the rotors turning!

The noise went away as soon as I loctited and put the set screws back into the shaft stop
