Just wondering what everyone thinks of this bird?

I actually own one and have been working on the paint. With the mech's all internal, Inverted engine, wire drive tail and supports throughout, a guy can't cut doors & windows. The main supports run lengthwise right through the center of the fuse. I'm thinking two things but seek advice:
1 =do a nice paint job, keep its stock Museum quality, fly it every second Sunday, call it my first scale project
2= Strip the mechanics and sub floors, cut the doors and windows in and throw a .60 size frame and mechanics in it. It is a real nice fiberglass fuse extremely light a lot of visible pluses, just not sure how to tackle it.
It will be my first scale project!!!!!
Any advice?

i bet i have the same fuse you do. it is an old old old old old graupner kit. i have mine already flying. if you want some photos email me at copterdocter2002@aol.com. i took all the old transmission type mechanics out, cut out all the windows, and threw my hawk with an os .32 in it and put a snazzy paint job on it. it looks pretty cool. i hope to see pics of yours..............emile

hey sycochin!!!
that is an old graupner 212 fuse i rescued from a buddy's attic. it was sitting up there almost 20yrs. still had the original mechs in it but was missing lots of parts. thats why i gutted it, cut out all the windows and brought it into the new millenium with a set of hawk 30 mechs. the pics vetrider took of me flying it are of it before it got the emergency floats and some other details added. my scale jobs usually reach flying status before they are ever completed. anyway, it flies great with an os .32. i have lots more pics of it, if u will email me i will send. the paint was done with lustrecoat from a can and a local sign shop did the letters for me. i still have to put the rescue hoist, nav,strobe, landing and search lights.

That's a gorgeous model. I'm doing exactly the same scheme on my own kit, a 412 SP(ScaleHouse kit, of course). This is the scheme that made me create the 412 kit in the first place. It was owned and flown by Bronson Hospital quite a few years back and I took a truckload of photos of it. Had the markings made locally and I'm almost finished painting it.

yeah james, it was for me. i know that's a surprise. i managed to squeeze in some time for one that was actually for me. if i didn't have a few others i'm working on for others, it and the 407 and the airwolf and the others on the back burner would all be flying. but hey, all part of the fun.
hey jerry, thanks for the compliment. that does mean a lot coming from you. i have seen your work over the years and you are a craftsman. my buddy steve who works for bell helicopters sends me all kinds of neat stuff and a photo of the 412 showed up and i just had to try it. it isn't exact but i liked the colors and the scheme. cant wait to see yours, i know it will be awsome.

Well, it seems as though I have a good project! I'm going to update this machine and call it my first scale Heli. If I can even come close to the Copter Doctors obvious attention to detail I'll be laughing. Now I just want some input for the type of Mechanics to put in her!
It will have to be a wire driven tail! 32/46 size

rcpilotsteve, a good project , you can use a flextail wire driven setup initially.. brass speedo wire or hirobo flex wire drive - speedo wire , it's braided wire.. pretty sure you can find this drive , i used it and it works , after you can go with angled gearbox , 2 or 3 stage carbon tubes and connectors .. there are several approaches , look at vario and hirobo you have everything you need

That's great thanks for the advice. One thing that The Doctor just brought to my attention was the huge drop between the top of the mech's and where the boom actually starts. He has described to me in great detail what he has done (Emile is good) Do you think a speedo type flex cable will allow for that angle?

i thought about the braided cable but after looking at it really close, it seemed like the way the drive system turned, would turn the cable in the direction opposite the braid. i was thinking maybe it would under load try to unwind the cable and cause a bad day. this was with cable from the honda motorcycle shop though. is there a certain type/kind maybe i need to consider??? the cable way would definately eliminate need for a costly 45 degree gear box back there. it sure works good for the hirobo huey, but they've got it braided to tighten as it turns.............knoww what i mean??

rcpilotsteve, yes , the easiest tail install is the flex cable which can snake from a higher point to a lower level and back up thru the vertical tail .. it'll lag alittle at full tail defelection, but will work fine for normal flying.

it's best that you bond low flat piece of fiberglass base or hard ply at the lowest point of the fuse as base instead of using thick rails which will raise the frame higher, you can trim the graphite frames alittle, round off sq edges etc.. and reposition the servos if needed.

the high profile frames 60 frames are initally a problem in height with hueys, so using 30-45 size frames will work better, and add a 50 engine. I was able to put a gmp cobra into my hirobo huey as these frames were perfect low profile at the top with a hirobo flex cable. hirobo flex cable is much thicker than the brass ones and has a nice square tip for the drive coupler set screws to catch onto . both cables work well.

if you want to use a shaft tail drive and depending on the mechs, you can also lower the tail output drive , using vario uni couplers you can get to use torque tubes cut to length and using a 3 - 45 degree gearboxes two from the the drive , one at the tail this can work as well, or use a short flex for the tail at the lowest point and and tubes from the main drive going down along the boom. so the ideas are endless for the tail drive .. use your best thoughts on on how to do it .

now a belt drive is not recommended although it would seem to be right as it will follow the contours with the boom and tail easily .. it would need to be renforced with additional pulleys and partitions, making it more complexed setup than needed and the boom has to be kept accessable to do that. flex's alot.

so there are many ideas when it come to a upswept tail drive system .. the quickest is flex cable / with a greased housing .. the best is with one or more angled gearboxes / torque tubes with uni joints between each point that you can get from vario, or robbe .. everything is clean with this approach and easily maintainable .. you decide ..
