Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > Elevator servo went out, big crash...

I was out doing a checkout on my Freya last weekend before a fun fly and 15 minutes into the flight the elevator servo seems to have gone out as the helo began doing flips, I was in 3D and managed to keep it in the air for awhile but eventually... you know... I did have a indicator that something was wrong about 15 seconds before the flips started. I was doing forward flips, three in a row and when I stopped the pitch cyclic (elevator) trim was off and the helo wanted to nose over for a few seconds. It went away and I did a couple of rolls and as I came back around the uncontrolled flips started. Here's the problem, after the crash the elevator servo works fine, the linkages for elevator are all intack and I've flown other airplanes with the same transmitter with no problem. It didn't feel like a hit as I had full control of the other functions. I use Futaba 9303's on my cyclic and they are a year and a half old with no problems from them. Does anyone have any ideas?

Servo

Evan,

Test to see if the servo has lost it torque. Try this:

Place the blades parrallel with the heli. Hold the flybar control arms firmly and give fore cyclic. If you can stop the travel with your hand fairly easily then the servo is bad. Even a 40 oz servo puts up quite a fight when doing this test.

Also, test it's ability to return to center. You can compare all of this to the Left/Right cyclic the same way. If the servo doesn't feel the same then it is most likely bad.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Thanks

I took the servo out of the helo and I have a servo horn with a 18" wood stick glued to it for checking centering, drifting, and throws. I madde it back when I was thinking of using C-65 servos(really bad centering). I put this on the servo and excersised it for 10 minutes or so with and without load and it always had good centering and throws. I then hooked a spring force gage to it at 5 inches out and it pulled the rated torque, I only tried it in the "up" direction though, I'll try the "down" direction tonight. Whenever I have a crash I need to figure out the why before I fly again, so that the cause doesn't cause another crash.....
