I read a back post that stated that you should start your heli at the point of take off instead of starting it & then carrying it to the liftoff area because when this is done the gyro will try to compensate for this movement. Is this correct ?? I ask because this is what I do....I start it by the garage & carry it out to the yard. When I lift off it has some funky movements for a while. Is the gyro compensating for my moving it by hand ? It is a 401 & 9253 in a Raptor 30.

Phil,

If you turn your heli on in HH mode so the gyro can properly initialize, then go to normal mode to carry the heli out and position it, then go back to HH after the heli is positioned, you have nothing to worry about.

The problem is if you're in HH mode, and then you manually reposition the chopper's yaw direction (turn the body), the gyro has no idea that was your hand and not the wind or other force, and as soon as it starts to lift off the gyro will push the tail trying to go back to the orientation the chopper was in when turned on.

Does that make sense?

I never even gave this issue a thought. I just cary it out and "center" the TR blades as I spool up, never had a problem

I have a GY240 in my Shuttle. May I point out as well flick your TX into throttle hold, that way you won't have an accident on your way to the take-off area. DavidH's centering technique works great just do it before you spool it up though.

I have my radio set to put the gyro in non-HH mode when its in throttle hold. I always put my heli into throttle hold when I carry it off to the pad, and when i'm ready to take off I turn off throttle hold, HH comes back on, and everything is happy. Carrying it around in HH mode can also bind your servo which can lead to premature servo death.

Heck the way I fly causes premature servo death anyway.

binding

Carrying it around in HH mode can also bind your servo which can lead to premature servo death.

Not if you set it up correctly. If the gyro has a travel adjustment, use it to ensure that the servo never binds. If it doesn't, tweak the mechanical setup so the servo never binds. Now you can carry it around, fiddle with it on the bench, fly it, whatever, and your servo will never bind up the linkages. If you skip this step, you risk binding the servo no just while you carry it, but while you fly it, while you work on it (sitting still on the bench) or anything else.

I leave mine in HH mode all the time. I work the rudder a bit while I'm spinning up the blades, to keep the tail from wandering. It doesn't take much... if you see the tail trying to move, just poke the rudder stick in the opposite direction. It doesn't always respond immediately, but it will when the blades get up to speed.
