Hello all. I am new to this great hobby as well as this board. I bought a R30 complete with a JR XP8103 and a field box recently. I have a few questions because I am concerned that the previous owner did not set it up correctly (he had the tail rotor belt reversed for one). My biggest concern is the throttle servo and the linkage rod that goes to the carb. Should the rod be on top or the servo horn or the bottom? Right now, it is on the top, but it just doesn't look right.

I am far from being a master at this. I am just now at the point where I can barely hover from the rear of the heli. All of your advice is appreciated.

The servo arm is on the bottom not facing top. More level and linear.

Another Flaw then

Thanks Heliman. Is there a certain point that I should target in the servo travel adjust in the transmitter or any pointers that you can give for ensuring that it is setup properly? I just want it to be set up right for not only the health of the engine, but also for when I am ready to use the engine's power.

Hi there!
Be sure to first check that the throttle TX endpoints are equal then, setup the throttle to center on the TX and set the carb to center also, now move the throttle stick to low and hi holding the ballink over but not on the carb ball, does it overshoot the full throw on the carb either dir? If so and it will, adjust the arm or the endpoints to enable full throw both directions including trim to kill the eng. It takes a lil tinkering but you can easly do it just remember keep the endpoints the same if you move 1 in move the other in too. This way the linkage will move the same amount and speed both hi and low.

Yes at the bottom. Set the ball 10mm from the center of the horn. Don't put the nut on yet. Find the approximate center of the throw on the carburator arm. 0 all the trims and sub-trims on your radio. Turn on transmitter and reciever. Place the servo horn where your approximate center is. Move the stick full travel while verifying the travel, you may have to move the servo horn or use another hole in one of the other legs. The object is try to get it pretty much mechanically perfect. Once you have achieved that lower your trim all the way. Now set the bottom ATV. Move the trim back to center and adjust your full stick ATV. It should start and idle just about right at 0 trim if you've done it right.

Now I am getting it

Thanks to both of you. One other thing..... Before I do all of that, should I check to see what the throttle curve is set to? And if so, what should it be like?

If your just learning your throttle curve should just be strait in normal ie:
0-25-50-75-100%
The pitch curve is a different story. It should be something like -1bottom,+6mid,+9top, this way if you chop the throttle it wont come down fast but will come down, dont stay at this setting any longer than you need as more neg is needed for decents especially in windy conditions. Eventually you will want a pitch curve bottom more like -4 to -6. At that time you will then want to use the idleup sw. and set the throttle curve to something in the general area like this in idleup:
80,65,50,75,100%. and in idleup2 go: 100,75,50,75,100%. These are decent starting pts and will get you going, you will have differences depending on temps, fuel, brand of blades, altitude, etc....so you will have to tweak it still as there are no magic numbers to set at. Good luck there and do find a manual and a guru to help your investment. Dave

cnsheets.... I live near Cherry Creek Res. I have only been here for a little over six months. Before that I was in Washington State. I do have the manual that came with it, but to me there are a lot of conflicts on what it says in comparison to what all of you are telling me. Personally, I would rather go by what you guys say. Always better to do something that has been tested and passed. I would trade all of the manuals for the experience that you all have.

We've all been there too and understand exactly. Just get some hovering in and work on soft landings and altitude changes for now. Try to be sure the eng is set just right too that will help lateron.
