Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > gyro sens -vs- piro speed?

setup = freya .61, gy401/9253, 8103, ModelSport carbon tail blades, stock gears, stock belt

I had the futaba 4 star horn on the last hole and couldn't get my tail to hunt with max gyro sens.
(HH mode, Aux 2 input, all mix/revo modes inhibited, 90 deg linkage with max throw on tail)

I then put on a monster round horn on last hole with a different 401 plugged into gear and noticed it didn't hunt until about 115% on the gear ATV (1800rpm headspeed).
(i thought this was weird since the 401 manual mentions that anything above 90% on the ATV equates to 100% for gyro sens)

What was most annoying though was as the gyro sensitivity increased the piro rate fell off dramatically.
ex...(back to old setup with 4 horn and Aux2 for gryo sens)

- gryo sens on 60%, will drift but piro's lightening quick at full stick
- gyro sens on 70%, no drift but will bounce back on piro stop - piro rate has decreased greatly
- gryo sens on 85% no drift and rock solid with no bounce on piro stop, but piro rate is unexceptable at full stick

The question I where does everyone "sacrifice" their gryo sens for piro rate.

cheers...jeff

I run the gain as high as I can since that makes the gyro hold better and stop better, as you observed.

For more piro rate, increase the ATV on your rudder channel. The gyro has expo built in on the rudder channel, so 130% (on a Futaba, JR may be a bit different) will more than double the yaw rate.

no compromises

First, let's talk about the gain... If you need to use an unreasonably large servo horn, it could be time to adjust something else. Can you fit longer tail blades, or wider chord tail blades? Can you move the ball link on the rudder bellcrank closer to the pivot? All of these will give you more tail rotor thrust for a given amount of servo movement, which will allow you to run a shorter servo arm.

I'd play with tail blades first, the MS blades are about the least effective you can get (in terms of raw thrust). NHP 105s are at the other end of the spectrum - they're long, they're wide, they have square tips. There's plenty to choose from in between those extremes. I've had great luck with the round-tipped SABs.

Anyhow, turn up the gain until the tail wags, then back off enough to stop the wagging.

So now you have the gain maxed out. If you want a faster pirouette rate, turn up the rudder ATVs and/or dual rates. Setting both at 140% will probably be more than fast enough.

If you get a bounce when you stop your pirouettes, turn up the 'delay' adjustment until the bounce goes away. (Other gyros have an 'acceleration' parameter that does the same thing, only you turn it down to stop the bounce.) You might be able to turn up the gain just a little bit after you do this.

A good gyro - like the 401 - doesn't force you to compromise.

outstanding advice...

right now I have the Rudder ATV at 65/65 so kicking that up is first on the list....
i'm still a rookie on rudder ATV and 401 Limit Throw settings...

freestyle,
what length SAB's did you go with??
(i have a .91 with 12/95 gears arriving tomorrow replacing the .61 ......)

cheers....jeff

Use the throw limiter on the gyro to make it impossible for the linkage to bind. ATV and dual rates are not a factor in the mechanical setup with the GY401 (or for any other HH gyro I know of, for that matter).

Then use the ATV and dual rate to get the piro rate you want. I tend to use the dual rates - it does the same thing, but it does it for both left and right with just one number to tweak. If I can't get the rate I want by adjusting the dual rate, I'll tweak the ATVs by 25% and tinker with the dual rate some more.

What length SABs? Beats me! "Long," I think. I don't remember. If there's two lengths available, buy one of each and see how they work on your heli. There's so many variables at work, what works best for me isn't likely to work best for you anyhow.

Turning up your ATVs from 65% to 100% will make a dramatic difference. I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.

I'm running 680mm on my Freya. You can go up to 700 or 710 max but it's not necessary due to the longer yoke extension. The effective disk is larger than most and 680 is readily available.
