Hi guys,
As some of you know I am totally new to this and posted a thread a couple of days back asking for help on where to start, I got a lot of helpful advise, tips and a couple sites to visit,
anyway to make a long story short I found this link to a "combo" that I feel is a bit more affordable than other prices I have seen, I would like you guys to please check out the link below and give me any comments, suggestions etc

http://www2.mailordercentral.com/he...fo.asp?number=1

Also tell me if this is all I would need other than the G2 sim, I know this is currently out of stock but i'm thinking it will sooner or later come back into stock right?

Have a great day,
-Ryan.

Hello:

In my opinion, the Raptor is OK, but I would go for a Scedau 30, which is what I started with.

I have read several problems with the raptors, Like the cluth, and the motor.

I would invest a little more and get the scedau.

Take a look here, and read also what Volkul has to say about raptors:

Nothing wrong with the Raptor, its a very good helicopter, in fact I've read the Sceadu forums and I see that they have some problems too, blade tracking issues, main gears stripping in flight and so on. The Sceadu and Raptor are both good choices but I personally like the Raptor it's lighter and less expensive to buy and repair. I personally own the R30, R50 and R60 and have not had any of the problems many have complained about.

Thanks guys,

I think i'll stick with the raptor as price is a HUGE issue with me right now.

But what you guys didnt answer is, is that that combo ok?
What else will I need? (other than a sim)

Cheers,
-Ryan.

COMBO

I highly recommed you get a heli kit , NOT the ARF. Also be sure to get the OS 32 engine. If price is an issue you might think about the Hawk IV kit , it includes the muffler. The Raptor does NOT.

That combo from heliproz does not include the radio , gyro or muffler.
You will also need some starting equipment and misc tools.

Electric starter, starting wand,12Volt battery,glo-driver,fuel ,fuel filter, fuel pump, flight box, metric tools, pitch gauge, blade holder,ect.........

FYI you can pretty much figure on shelling out about $1200, give or take a hundred or two for a good heli and all the equipment needed ,including the sim......

Ryan,
The Raptor is a good heli, I have had extremely good luck with it. Some people have had problems with it, and I am not sure if it is bad luck or a lack of proper care and attention to detail. The thunder tiger engine that comes with the combo you found is the topic of hot debates. Some people claim it to be better and more powerful than the OS .32, but the vast majority say it is not a good engine. Also the muffler that comes with the TT engine is often replaced.

Toyman was correct about the Century Hawk IV. You can find these at heli-world:

My Dad started with this heli and it has been trouble free. You can get the heli, OS .32 motor (very good motor), and a century torpedo muffler, all for 220.00. Or you can get the ARF for 249.00. I would suggest buying a kit so that you get the experience of how it goes together and for future maintenance, plus you save 20.00 bucks which is the price of a receiver battery or a gallon of fuel.

Hope this helps.

What heli to start

I agree with RaptorCop and Toyman, The Hawk IV is the best buy, inexpensive and problem free. Century could probably get $100.00 more for them and they would still be competitive. But I must make a correction to RaptorCops pricing. I am sure he did not want to make it sound that way but the wording may lead one to believe that you get an ARF version with the great OS32SXH installed, including the trouble free one piece CNC machined muffler for only $249.00. That price is the ARF and muffler without the engine, with the engine it is $339.95 (still far less then the Raptor or the Sceado). And the $220.00 price is for the kit and the muffler, no engine. The kit combo with the engine is $319.95.

You can get them from Rick's (Ron Lund) or from Heliworld. I am sure if you phoned Ron Lund and asked him which he would suggest he will recommend the Hawk and not the Raptor. In fact IMHO I think the HAWK IV with the $22.00 bearing upgrade is a better heli then the Sceado, and costs a lot less. ($242 compared to $370.00)

Of course, because Heli-Proz do not stock the Hawk, they would not recommend it. They would only recommend something they stock. On the other hand, I am sure that it makes no difference to Ron which one you buy so his recommendation would be more credible,as he carries all three.

Heli Proz is a great place to buy.

The Raptor is a great heli, so is the Sceadu - I have both. But for starting off, I would say go with the Raptor.

Do yourself a favor, buy the basic kit with the $20 ball bearing upgrade. Do not buy the ARF. By getting the ARF, you are "wasting" money. Spend a couple off weekends and put it together yourself. Not only will you learn how the heli is put together (very helpful if and when you crash), but you KNOW IT WILL BE DONE RIGHT. I have seen too many ARF helis that were built wrong... Remember, they have some guy in China building YOUR helif for 15 cents an hour... If you do get the ARF, take it apart and re-build it!

Go with the OS 32 SX-H motor... It is very important to have a good running motor. The Thunder Tiger motor is crap... Search back through all the posts about the crappy TT motor...

Lastly, and most important, buy the best radio you can aford. It really makes a huge difference. Get at least the Futaba 8U or 9C or the JR 8. Stay away from the 6 channles.

If you stick with the raptor, I suggest that you go to: www.heli-kraft.com
Go to helicopter and you have a raptor 30 with a OS 32 engine (th4832os) for $299. I send them an email to know the cost of the shipping and they told me about $45. I don't know if it has the 49 or 20BB. I heard good things about them. I was going to order from tham but I find a used venture and OS 32 at a good price.

good luck with whatever you decide to buy

ARF or NON-ARF, that is the question!

I bought a new Raptor from a guy on Ebay, it was his spare. I don't know if it was an ARF or not. How can I tell and I am concerned about the clutch? I already ordered the OS to put in it. I use the TT 36 in my GMP Cricket. Should I rebuild the whole thing?
