| I work in reverse engineering of real turbine parts, and unless the design is patented or has some feature that is patented you are ok.
People reverse engineer components all the time. We try to make improvements to the design whether it is dimensional, materials, processing or performance, through analysis that is as good or better than the OEM. The OEMs are not necessarily interested in building the best product, they "Build in Obsolescence" or build in degradation so they can sell replacement parts. There is a market for small business like mine to build the best damm product and sell it. I don't care about making billions of dollars, but we can make millions selling better components and not care about having to sell replacement parts in the future. The market is so big, who cares.
My advice if you don't want to get into investigating whether the designs are patented or want to stay out of potential trouble, is to use the OEM design for the "attachement" or other features that mate up to other components and modify everything else slightly.
