I use poly's for creating models. A good place to start is www.3dbuzz.com or www.3dcafe.com. You can get free video tutorials which are great from the 3dbuzz site. They'll save you months of clicking stuff and wondering what it did. Its taken me 3 years (on and off) of personal time to get to the stage i'm at and I reckon I know about 10% of Max so far... You need to focus on what you want to do. Max does modelling, rendering, particles, textures, lighting, animation etc etc etc etc. It takes ages to learn each thing. Pick what you want to do and learn it, don't get sidetracked by playing with the physics engine and making a massive wacky dominos animation I'm focusing on Modelling (poly) and lighting/rendering.

Have fun!

Tutorials included with it should do it but I can also suggest you to buy the 3ds6 Bible. It include a bit more details on some aspects. But it's still a big crap for that kind of books, lot of stuff missing about lightnings.

If it's only to do some mesh, stick with the tutorials and save your money for some more memory for your computer instead

tips:
Uses Meshes for structures but use Patches for canopies.
Use the Boolean tool to cut your pieces the desired way when they are a little bit odd.
Use the Array tool to create gears.
