Ion Crash

ddang,
I have had the pleasure of crashing both of my Ions in a two day period!! One my fault for using a sbec which I don't think was able to handle the servo load therefore the gyro reset while in flight. The other was due to a bad reciever. One was minor and only required boom, torque tube, etc., etc. The other required frames and everything. Both are back in the air and have a number of flights on them. Batteries survived both crashes. Wrinkled the corner of one pack a bit but that was it. The packs seem to pop off the heli on impact and seperate quite well from the mechanics. I fly in nice soft grass so that certainly helped absorb alot of the impact. Bottom line, get one, you'll love it. I have Extreme's and Tempests but this is my favorite heli to fly.

Regards,
Eric Klapstein

After having test flown a friends Logo10 last weekend I sort of caught the electric bug. If I go electric I want something equal size to R60 or bigger.
Q. What's it cost to put an IOn in the air?

$2,100.00, with one set of Batteries, $2,660.00 with two set of batteries.
I am not counting Servos, Receiver, Gyro & Blades.
Plus you need a charger, Orbit, 350.00. Power supply, ($140.00)
Some people have two charges and two power supplies. I do have one.

Yup, the Ion-X may sound expensive when you look at the total upfront outlay. But consider the total outlay for a liquid powered heli, all of it, engine, pipe, plugs, driver, starter, glow driver. Then you have to buy fuel and buy more fuel and then more. With the Ion-x, if you are past the point of crashing frequently, the one initial investment isn't all that bad as it also represents a years worth (or maybe more) of fuel.

Plus:

---No mess, you actually have to put oil on it once in a while.
---Easy to travel with, batteries go right on a plane, nitro does not.
---Quiet, will not upset noise conscious neighbors.
---Smooth, no vibrations, radio gear has a tendency to last.
---Consistency, no needle valves or glow plugs, always runs the same.
---Easy to setup, due to the repeatability of electric motors, yours will
run the same as mine which runs the same as Erics etc. etc. etc....

Other things to consider...

I was pretty jaded about the thing for a fun copter until we took one that is used as a camera ship and set it up for 3-d yesterday.

it is running 10s3p and was as capable as flying like a strong sixty size heli for the same run time.

the 10s4p packs should be better because they will allow you to tap 80 A draw instead of 60 A, useful when you "bog", which I always do because I like to fly 90s and suck at it.

ran it "dry" on one flight and it gives you a better warning than a glow heli when its time to land, thats kinda nice. about 30 seconds

as for crashing it, yeah it would suck, the cost justification argument of buying fuel upfront is weak, you never know how long a machine (or battery) is ever going to last.

figure a 90 is a little over 2k and a 90 size electric is a little over 3k minimum to do up with all the goodies and get off the ground

I didnt like that, but now that I can fly it in places and at times where my glows or a gasser would never be allowed, an electric is worth it.

Hey. The literature says the 109s only do 9s.

yea charge a pack @ a time or you can parallel them and you willget a good charge but you will need a better charger like the schulze Isl 6-636 that will charge all the way to 13s!!!

FYI...Lipo's do NOT go right on an airplane. If you are travelling, they should be shipped via ground transportation.

Shipping companies will not accept our type of Lipo packs for air shipment. They will accept quart containers of glow fuel, no gallons. I don't know why they differentiate between packs and cell phones/laptop, although I have not heard of any cell phone or laptop battery fires. I think they are usually in a plastic container that are less likely to be damaged?

Jet fuel in an aircraft wing is very unlikely to catch fire.
