HI, I was just wondering how many people use 2 flight modes or 3 and which would be the better choice. I currently have 3 norm (hovering), idle1 for forward flight and basic aero's (loops rolls ect ) and idle 2 for 3D ( V curve for inverted ect..) should I just have normal and the v curve

I have 5 flight modes (9Z Tx):
- normal (hovering)
- idle 1
- idle 2 (V curve)
- hold, activated when throttle stick is lowered < 5%
- hold, activiated immediately on switching.

I have 4 modes N, I1, I2, Hold and run the same "V" pitch curves in all
modes, throttle "V" curves in I1 and 2 to back up the GV1 gov.
My headspeed is set lowest in N then higher in I2 for basic aeros and
highest in I2 for more demanding manuvers.

I use normal and idle one. Normal with a regular curve, and idle one for aerobatics. Pretty sad for a 10x, where I can have upto five modes and hold.

I use 3 plus hold. -10 to +10 all modes. Pretty much just use modes to change headspeeds. Normal for spooling up. Medium headspeed in ID1. Very High Headspeed ID2.

Pretty much spool up. Fly a quick circuit and figure 8 to make sure it feels right (ID1). Then crank it and go (ID2). I try to never fly in normal... always seem to get bored and flip it over.

Five works for me. Normal, Idle up1, Idle up2, Idle up3 and Hold.

so i should stay with 3 plus the hold curve spool up in normal and flick to idle1 while still grounded then change to idle 2 when i wana do so aero's in flight is that the plan.

Since discovering govenor's I only need NORMAL - just to spool the beast up untill the TJ engages then IDLE 2 for flight - HOLD for Auto's.
All curves the same
Simple stupid!!!!

Normal 1650, idle 1 1850 with a V-curve and hold. Nice and simple for a simple person

5?! why use 5? what do you change between the modes?

Oki, maybe I'm too complicated then

I do fly mostly FAI F3C and that means a lot of tweaking with different setups. I do used to have two flight modes just for hovering (normal and idle up1) with different head speeds and a bit difference in pitch curves. But now I use Normal mode only and tweak the th and pitch by knobs if needed.

Then I use one (idle up1) for general aerobatics like loops and push overs and stuff. One (Idle up2) mode is for rolls ONLY! It's a lot easier to perform very good FAI rolls if you have one mode which is made for rolls only. It has a LOT of throttle in it to maintain very high headspeed during multiple rolls or revelsals and the pitch curve is also tweaked just for roll. This is not the same with governor, believe me. Then I got one (idle up 3) for the rest of FAI stuff like the Cobra Roll and 3D. And the fifth of course is the Hold. That's about it.

3 flight modes here.

Normal for spooling up - headspeed @ 1600
Idle 1 V curve (10, 10) @ 1750
Idle 2 V curve (10,10) @1850
Hold

That's it. Just use the different flight modes really to change headspeed.

Here is how I setup my radio (Airtronics Stylus) - I run 5 flight modes:

Normal Mode - Hovering and take off
>> Gyro in rate mode.
>> Pitch from -4 to +10.
>> Expo on cyclic controls.

Idle up 1 - I use this mode for mild forward flight, sometimes if flying backwards circuits in strong wind.
>> Same pitch curve as normal mode (-4 to +10).
>> Raised throttle at the lower two points to keep blade rpm in descents.
>> Gyro in HH mode.
>> Expo on cyclic controls.

Idle up 2 - Aerobatic mode, inverted flight, 3D, etc.
>> Pitch from -10 to +10.
>> V shaped throttle curve - higher head speed than normal (~1850), or idle-up 1 modes.
>> Gyro in HH mode.
>> Expo on cyclic controls.

Idle up 3 - This is my 'piroflip' mode. I set up a separate idle-up for piroflips so I can set the tail rotation rate independently of my other modes.
>> Pitch from -10 to +10.
>> V shaped throttle curve - higher head speed than normal (~1850), or idle-up 1 modes.
>> Gyro in HH mode.
>> Linear travel on cyclic controls.
>> Tail rotor travel rate cut to about 65%.

Idle up 4 - Throttle hold - autorotation mode.
>> Pitch from -4 to +10.
>> Gyro in rate mode.
>> Expo on cyclic controls.

I understand what Jarno is up to, this is very common amongst FAI pilots, I do the same thing myself.

I have 5 modes, they are all the same I just like playing witht he switch when I fly ;-)

Normal - Hovering Head Speed about 1450

Idle 1 -10, 0, +10 Head speed at about 1750 Lower Cyclic Rates

Idle 2 - 10, 0, +10 Head Speed 1790 Higher Cyclic Rates

Throttle Hold - active with Switch

GV-1 Active with switch

This is not the same with governor, believe me.

Why do you say that, the Gov can hold constant head speed under load.

As soon as I rotate, I go into 2, and stay there with gov on till I land. Its a pain flipping switches around, I read a post on RR that said CY reccomends getting used to 1 flight mode when your flying, and stay there! Works for me!

With the 9Z etc its quite useful to have extra flight modes to set a different Piro rate, its instead of using dual rates...

just a different switch thats all

so are your normal curves setup to hover at half stick or 3/4 stick, to change after spool up or doesnt it matter. cause if you change mode on the ground the heli is only gona gain power but lose pitch so its not gona jump or anything is it ( did i just answer my own question )

Stick with the same pitch range in all flight modes then at least the heli will feel the same. You may want to fly round in normal mode and change to idle up.

I have all my helis set to the same pitch range/curve (straight line) in all modes...

I learned the hard way when i played yoyo with my fury extreme switching flight modes...

They are set for 3/4 stick hover with exception of my gasser which will not be doing 3d, so its set for half stick hover...
