Scale Model RC Helicopters > Taking the plunge on a Century .30 Airwolf

I am tired of waiting for Ace to come out with their version of the Airwolf for my Raptor. So, I'm going to buy the Century Airwolf with the Hawk mechs. Since I already have most of the electronics, anybody want to tell me what else I need when I buy the Airwolf. I'm buying the painted kit w/ retracts and mechs. I'm thinking the scale muffler is a must, and two servos for the retracts. Anything else?

Hoh, if you're reading this, nice work on the Bell222 video. I like your style of flying. I burned the video on cd so I could watch it and try to imitate your flying style. It looks read smooth.

sykochin,

Thanks. Do you have any experience in putting this kit together? I would like to know how your experience was.

Thanks.

Hi Gerry,
I built the (unpainted full kit version), and am flying it now. It flies beautiful. The biggest recammendation I can give you is try to build light yet strudy, be sure to add a hard attachment to the top of fuse to mechs to stop the fuse shell from resonating and shaking(glasswork is thin), and by ALL means run only semi lifting mains( this is a must) you wont believe how much better it hovers and handles with semi mains installed. You can get 550 semi mains in white gelcoat glass from ABmodels for just $28 and they are sweet, thats what Im running. The fuse is crowded so I got lazy and just locked down my retracts but they can be made to work and I may do it this yr if I get feelin spunky. The kit is easy to build tho I did modify a few things, it was completed in 1 month ready to fly and painting took up 2 weeks of the building time. I Installed SE mechs as I had just built 1 and had then decided to do a scaler. The regular hawk is ok tho for a scaler I just wanted the extra thrustBBs etc in mine is all that the SE has along with a few other upgrades over the reg hawk. The tail pinion is a plug in device I STRONGLY recammend you disassemble the mechs and squeeze the pinion until the drivewire has no play otherwise the tail will be swishy and the gyro wont be able to lock properly with all the slop. Ive experienced this on several Hawks, frankly a tube drive is the best setup hands down for any scaler as it will never need adjusting ever, a belt drive is ok too like the rappy has until the temps change and the belt gets loose or tight then headache city. The wire drive wont give you too much trouble IF you remove all slop tho so thats what I did and its working fine Im using 15%expo on all controls including tail, mine weighs 9lbs soaking wet, its a blast to see it crusing along!!!!!!!!!!Im running the OS32SXH with a century scaler muff and a JR8 WDT PCM for my radio issues. Im running Byron 20% fuel and it just barely smokes (I like that fact!) If you have any other Qs feel free to ask, I have pics of it as well. Happy hovering, Dave

So, I'm going to buy the Century Airwolf with the Hawk mechs
You can squeeze Raptor mechanics in the Century 222 body. It works very nicely. You need to hack up the collective arm to clear the top of the fuse.

I am not familiar with Century mechanics, but if you already own a Raptor and have spares like I do, you might want to consider it. The Raptor flies so nice and it's extremely reliable.

I have one with the Hawk Mech. Mine is ARF. Dummyproof version.
I added a plywood prior installing the mech. So it's more stonger.
You don't have to use a scale muffler, just regular muffler will do, there is a lot of space in there. It's has more room that the Bell-222 since the side wing are larger.
It really flies nice...
Good luck

sykochin,

How did you setup the pod and boom heli? Did you trim it out first outside of the fuse or did you just stick it in and fly. Also, how did you fit the retracts?

GerryRap;
Good choice!. Thanks for the compliments.
Install everything to the fuse. It was well designed together with the Hawk Mech. Do the trimming with the fuse, so you do it only once.
If you need any help, let me know. I just finished my 30 ARF Airwolf. Ready to test fly.
Here is the link to install the retracts.

HOH, you finally read my post!

I was hoping for you to drop by this thread soon. When are you going to put up a video of your Airwolf flying? So, give me the goodies. What do I need when I buy this kit? Tell me your experience. I suspect it's not as easy as everyone says it would be. Anything you could think of, some small item that wasn't in the kit, add a little plywood here and there, buy wheels for the retracts, buy main blades, etc. Anything would be very helpful.

Thanks,
GerryRap

Gerry, when you buy the Airwolf ARF. it comes with everything you need, but of course not the engine and radios.
The Mechanic is already done for you. As I said on my Bell 222 site "Dummyproof Kit". I pratically did not do anything. The retracts, tires and main blades come with the kit. It's very simple.
I'm ready to fly my airwolf. I have to find times now, so my wife can shoot the video for me. I will let you know once I get it to fly.

I agree the ARF version is a good way to go very easy and nice paint finish I do strongly recammend semi mains the heli being 8or9 lbs needs all the extra lift it can and it will also fly better on semis after you try em you wont ever go back to syms on a scaler ever.

Hoh,

Are you sure the Airwolf kit comes with the wheels and blades for the tail and main? It does not look like it from the parts pic in Centuryheli website?

I'm sure they do come with the blades, tail and main blades, also including the retracts and the wheels.
Only $200.00 different, try to get the ARF. You can hardly paint as good as this ARF. and Only took me 8 hours to get my ARF airwolf to fly.
Call this 408.942.9521 and press #4.

I bought the ARF airwolf..... A lot of people talked me into buying some 660mm Semi-Symetrical carbon blades for it....more lift. I have yet to fly it though.. just don't have the guts yet

sykochin - Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure about those details until Century updated their website. I wish they could have also updated the fuselage table and not just make it look different.

deckerv - Why did you get 660MM blades? Is this for the bigger 60 size Airwolf?

I decided on getting the full painted kit w/ retracts and Hawk SE mechanics. I plan on purchasing semi-sym blades and scale muffler. I plan on finishing the body with a high gloss finish. I sort of don't like the matt finish from Century. I wonder if I could just tell them to finish the body with high gloss instead of matt finish when I order it?

Anyway, I plan on ordering the kit by mid June. If Thunder Tiger puts out their version before then, then I'll postpone my purchase and investigate. I just hope that when I do purchase the Century kit, and TT releases their version, that I won't be sorry about spending $700.00 on Century.

Thanks for the help/advise. I hope this kit comes together as smooth as most of you have experienced.

They dont paint their fuses, they come in to the warehouse this way so if you dont like it you will have to clearcoat it yourself, frankly at 10ft who is gonna notice anyway? Seems like a lot of wasted effort on an already built/painted barf..............errr arf., with the painted version you have already lost bragging rights anyway.
