I am thinking about ordering a camera mount for my Raptor 50V2.
Since I have video/photo editing as a parttime job/hobby, I want to combine both hobbies.

I need a system that is easily installed/removed since I still want to do ordinary flights.
I have seen several people mention M1 Carbon 30.
Is it possible to install PAN on this mount at a later time?
Do you need another person for using a pan function?

I want to take aerial photos of buildings, should I look at a PAN mount instead of the M1 Carbon 30?

Thanks..

Yes, you can upgrade the M1 with a pan feature, I believe that it is a hundred dollars and that includes a clutch mechanism.

If you are going to be using this feature it usually involves a second camera person.

I can tilt the camera mount and take pictures with out a camera person, but the pan feature is not as easy to orient from the ground. What I do is generally predetermine the tilt and then shoot a few pictures at a setting above and below your predetermined setting and at various altitudes. I generally use the tail of the helicopter to pan the camera, this way I know that the field of view is in line with the tailboom, you also don't have to worry about getting the landing gear in the picture. If you are thinking about video, go with the pan feature and use a camera person.

I own two of the M1 mounts and I couldn't be any happier with the performance, service and support from the gang at Airfoil. I use them for everything except video. They will fly great on evrything from a 30 to a gasser or an electric. The lighter mounts are much easier to auto if needed.

Thanks Flyboy.

Sounds like the M1 Carbon is great for my Rappy 50 then.
Do you know how heavy the mount is?
Just wondering what kind of camera I can use.
I have several, but do not want to start with my Canon xm2 yet
Will the Raptor 50 manage to lift this type of camera?
I will mainly use it for photos, but don't want to use my "working" digital cam in the beginning. Can an Ixus do for starters?

There are a few nice mounts out there (not that the airfoil is not a nice mount).

I have a R50V2 also, but don't use it for photo. You'll have to try to divert the exhaust away from your camera, or at least cover it in a plastic.

Dr. Phil, have you checked the HelicamSolutions camera mounts? Just another option.

Thanks guys.
Yeah, ImRich. I thought maybe exhaust would be a problem.
Any tips on how I can divert it? Make some sort of muffler extender?

Jared, I'll check Helicamsolutions now!
Nice to have alternatives.

Wow... Helicamsolutions offer a tilt and PAN for 400$ !!
How are they both compared (with M1 Carbon30)

Hey Philip, you can't go wrong with the M1 Carbon 30. I have it with the pan upgade under an Airfoil electric and couldn't be happier. In my opinion you should go with the pan version, since it doesn't cost much more and you never know when you're going to need it.

I haul a Olympus 8080 still camera that weighs 1.6 pounds with the electric and it works great. I would think your Raptor would haul it easily.

I did a review of the helicam solutions, you can see it here.

http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t113100p1/

I wanted to get an airfoil too and compare them, showing the strengths and differences, but I can't afford both of them.

PM me or email if you want more details on it.

As to diverting the exhaust gasses. I found my particular R50V2 is a bit nose heavy, so i'm sure it could withstand a light tube heading to the rear.

I haven't flown the R50 for a camera ship, but I think it could do it easily.

Nice RStacy!!
I think maybe I'll steal your idea

Well written review ImRich! Got a lot of info there. Thanks.
I'll send you a PM about more details

So far Helicamsolution is tempting, but I haven't ruled out M1 carbon yet.

Basically, the advantage of the Airfoil is experience. Countless numbers of these mounts are being used every day without any problem. It was designed with the intention to be as user-friendly as possible.
The design is tried and true in every way. Several hundreds of hours have been put into R&D to make the mount as beneficial as possible. In regards to using plastic, the carbon rods and 6061 aluminium on the M1 30 offer more strength and durability without sacrificing weight.
Also, definately get the pan. Especially after using the mount for a while and seeing what you can lift in terms of cameras. If you ever want to try video, it will be worth every cent!!

RStacy,
I like how you rigged the exhaust. Don't you get any kind of blowback from the exhaust?

ImRich,
Why was your thread for the review topic closed?

I have heard nothing but great things about all the above mentioned systems.

Here is the method that I used on the Caliber30. No effect on performance. Be sure to use a larger diameter tube than the exit of your exnhaust. Over sixteen hundred hours on this helicopter/system.

I am sure that would work as well.

I have experimented with a few aproaches, I have found most anything that won't melt, is semi smooth so oil won't stick to it too much, and is pointed preferably hrizontal to the tail boom will work.

Don't forget to plug/unplug the tube! They drip!

Flyboy,

Nice choice of canopy design!

But wow, that's a long extension!

By the way, I saw a note from Curtis on the Muscle pipe. It seems he claims that you can considerably restrict the exhaust to quiet the exhaust noise more without affecting engine performance.

If this is true, an exhaust extension should be no problem.

Of course, I'm not sure how much 'considerably restrict' would be considered 'too much'!

But I do have a Muscle Pipe 2 QL on my R50V2 and it runs great, but that's another topic.

Rstacy, looking at the picture of your mount, I'm trying to figure out how it compensates for roll? Surely it does?

One final question :
How is the record button activated?
I see that the Pro60 have 2 servoes included. I guess there is one for pan and one for tilt.

Do I need an aditional servo for pushing the button?
