Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Preflight and/or Postflight Inspection

I'm pretty new to helis, but have fooled with mechanical things all my life. (Including a 1906 Stanley Steamer - but that's another story).

I also am a firm believer in preflight and postflight routines. An ounce of prevention, and all that kind of thing.

What do you consider a Must-Do in your preflight and/or Postflight inspection? My helis are a Raptor 30v2 and a Raptor 30v2 converted to a 50.

I do use an onboard battery monitor.

Do you lubricate before each fight? Mainshaft, tail slider? Anything else?

If we get enough discussion on this, I'll compile a Preflight and/or Postflight checklist and post it here.

Everything...

I do a preflight at the begining of the day and look the entire heli over.
All nuts/bolts are tight
Gyro is on firmly
No loose wires or connections
Muffler is tight
Servo horns are tight and the screw is installed
linkages are loose (no binding) and firmly on the ball studs

Then my quick preflight is usually just before each flight
Head looks tight
Tailbox is good
Fuel is good
Battery voltage is good via voltmeter not the minders
Overall visual looks good

Then at the end of the day I wipe it all down and do my preflight check again.

So far it has worked for me. No mechanical crashes due to missing something.
I also do a complete teardown and rebuild about every 3 months if I haven't dumb thumbed it sooner.

i do postflight inspections at the end of the day while charging batteries. I always store fully charged. I to see that no end to end play exists on all of the ball links, all of the screws, spacers and frames, servo connections, antannea connection, check for chafing of fuel lines or servo wires. I lube certain pieces immediately before flight. I use tri-flo for most lubing. If I feel that a ball link or other moving part is dirty, I will sometimes use remoil to clean it. Remoil is a very thin teflon oil that slings off immediately. It slings the dirt with it after a few spool ups and leaves the teflon.

Hey Fritz,

Very good to hear from you. I certainly have gotten benefit from your pages. In fact I built up a Raptor a couple of weeks ago and had your manual right at hand.

As to the checklists, they are very comprehensive. Thanks for the links.

I'm still hoping others will chime in.
