Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Did you hear about the RC Fatality this weekend?

I was at the office today and a co-worker came up and handed me a copy of the Dallas Morning News. There was a small story about a 60 year old man out in Arizona flying an RC airplane and lost it in the sun or something to that effect and the plane hit him in the chest killing him.

This is not a joke. I read the paper myself. His friends said he used to race cars at the local drag strip and had noticed the RC planes flying nearby the track and ultimately joined the RC community. He was quoted to have said that flying planes should be a safer hobby than drag racing. weird eh?

They didn't say what type of plane it was or any other details. I just wonder if anyone else heard about this and might have more info.

It's a terrible thing to happen and I really feel for his friends and family left to deal with the loss. If anything, let this tragedy make us all a little safer from now on. That could be the only good to come out of the tragedy and we, the RC community have the power to do it.

Oops, I didn't see the other post about this story, sorry bout that!

True

I live in Tucson AZ and I am sorry to say the story was true. It happened at an airplane field that none of us heli guys flew at. I will keep the story simple to stop the telephone effect. He basically had been flying for 3 years and was competent and lost site in the east rising sun he was looking up and then turned right the runway went east to west. He looked right and the guy next to him ducked and the plane hit him square in the chest collapsing the left lung and causing massive heart tramua. I am not sure of the time for the emergency crew but for where the field was located anything under 30 minutes would have been outstanding. There were several other fliers who were skilled in medical treatment and did everything right but to no avail the damage was to severe. His name was Roger Wallace. Not 100 percent if that was correct. He had given up drag racing because of his age and he was getting worried about the danger. Everyone was shocked locally and it hit me kind of hard but when I think about all the terrible ways to die. Cancer in a hosipital bed and eveything else terrible. The man passed away doing something enjoyable like most of us would want to. He was in his 60 and was cheated by a few years. May he rest in peace. In his tragic death he has given me more respect for my heli and safety than anything else possible and I am sorry that it takes events like this to cause that. I still feel safer at the field than driving to and from it. Please feel free to contact me if you need more info and i will make sure i get you in touch with someone who can give the details first hand. I don't really feel the details are important I think it is the big picture. In the last few days several people have asked how a 9 pound model could hurt you. I can't believe so many people are blind to physics. Energy goes up by the exponential if I am not mistaken. I don't want to continue this in this thread but where are the engineers here what would 10 pounds at 50 miles and hour be?

Rest in Peace

-Dave

I can't remember the issue but recall a retired drag racer was endorsing a product in a full page ad in Model Aviation. If any one can find the issue please let us know.
