I am thinking about getting an MA ION, but need a few questions answered. What king of batteries would be the best for the heli, how much are the batteries, and what kind of charger and power converter do you use to charge the batteries inside the house. you know 12V DC converted to 110V AC. I like to use the chargers inside so I have air conditioning and keep the batteries out of the sun and in the AC ( cooler is better). Any help would be greatly appreciated. And one last thing, GY401 or GY601. This will possibly be my third helicopter and I like to research my purchases way in advance to avoid disappointment in the end.

Hi Kris,

Batteries: I'm using both 6000 and 8000mah battries with mine. The heli is nice and light with the 6000's and flies like a strong 60 or 70. The 8000's are a bit heavier but are noticeabley more powerful than the 6000's.

I see about 1870rpm in a hover with both packs which drops to about 1690 when loaded up w/ the 6000's and 1770 w/ the 8000's. I fly both packs for 8min (that's my 90 nitro timelimit too), after which the 6000's are about 70% dischaged and the 8000's about 62%.

The batteries are charged with a pair or Orbit Pro chargers, one per battery pack - powered by a 55A Rivergate RDC-55 powersupply. A pair of deep-cycle non-spill batteries are used for field charging.

Gyro: Given that it flies pretty much like it's nitro brothers, the 601 will probably work best if you're doing lots of pirouetting stuff and want as consistent a pirouette rate as possible - if not the 401 will probably be fine. Mine's fitted with a 601 which works very well.

If your kit doesn't already include the 55T secondary gear, I'd suggest getting one for slightly reduced head-speed (1870 vs 2010) and a bit more torque.

Nice kit - don't think you'll be dissapointed.

I was also wondering about the cost and best place to buy the batteries, the charger, and the power supply.

Thanks again

So I am looking at 650.00 for 1 set of batteries and 3 hours of charging time if I go charging at field with one charger, the ION is a great copter but it seems like I have to win the lottery or hit it big in Vegas (ha ha) to own one.

Kris,

If you want to fly a lot you'll want to stretch a little and go for two chargers. The turnaround time for 8000's flown for about 8min is about 35min if charged to 90% at 8A. I fly 2 sets of packs - one's left on charge while the other is flown. On the typical day with other guys out I'll usually have a charged pack ready and waiting by the time it's my turn to go up again.
