Safety - RC Helis are not toys > What happens to a thrown blade?

How do a thrown blade react in the air?

I have the stock wooden blades and they have a lead weight in the end of the blade, does this mean a thrown blade will come 'lead' first like an arrow, or will it flutter and stop quite short?

Hopefully it wont happen, but I'm curious how it'd behave.

-T5-

ps. On the first test of my Rappy-50 the tail pitch slider broke on spool up and threw a tailblade + grip just past me, it was sort of scary!

I'm guessing it would act almost like an arrow coming off at 90' to the plain of rotation and slightly fwd of.
I'd hate to be in the path of one

It's what happens to the remainder of the helicopter that is impressive.

It either most likely comes off and looses aerodynamicness and dosent do anything or it comes off like a spear and hits my heli shield and is deflected.....

mine caused a boom strike make sure you glue the plastic roots to the blade after cutting covering under roots this is not an option

Slightly off topic

I did see a friend spool up and older Eagle with the hard 50 gram paddles last year. All you saw was a black mass flying with the horizon at a very high speed. We found it well over 200 feet away, much farther than all of the speculation before we found it. These things witnessed, will scare the hell out of most people, including yours truely.

I had one go over my head from about 30 feet out from the heli. That's why my hovering is done above the 6'2" mark.

One of the fellows at my field had a little mishap this spring with his Raptor 60. Throttle hold was set to high so clutch did not disengage. Due to something amiss with the gyro he hit throttle hold. During touch down one of the blades lightly touched the snow (remember this was early spring so the snow is pretty well saturated and granuluar). Because the rotor was still being driven by the engine power the head assembly sheered at the upper jesus bolt. The remainder of the head with both blades/paddles attached continued on for about 70'. Very unfortunate, but it looked so cool and gracefull.

jesus bolt

good ole jesus bolt hehe

i once saw a raptor 30 in fast foward flight, pull up and at about 60 degrees the head came right off and went up to about 100 feet, and came back down in one peice...the raptor spun straight into the ground running full throttle with no drag on the engine(we all know how that sounds!) hit the ground and rolled about 10 times then stopped on its skids...motor quite running on the fourth roll or around there...when it happend the heli was at about 20 feet up..The heli was prety trashed up, but the main rotor head was in perfect condition(doesnt that always break?!?!) i dont know what fun fly i was at our anything....but it was right when i decided to start flying...i guess it moved me when i saw the crash..i said to myself, damn i want that to happen again! so since i started to fly, ive been trying the whole time with no luck

I think

That happened to Jeff Fassbinder at the San
Diego Fun Fly last year on Friday.

Those heads do take their sweet time coming
down, I was amazed about the whole thing.

Corey, I think your problem is that you are not trying hard enough.

Ive seen it twice

Both time the blade went strait for a LONG time...

The first time was wooden blades when I ws real young.. I dont remember much except that the blade went a LONG ways.

The second was at the 2001 Heli Heat wave... An x-cell ST ejected a Tapered FG main blade.. There was a MASSIVE sound that I can no way discribe,, followed by the engine Revving up and" POP"-ing. The whole mess fell out of the air about 75 feet hitting the ground.. .. I have never seen a heli so Decimated... My bets are that it ws totally trash before it even hit.... Just after the explosion, I saw somthign flutter way over to my right.... It was the blade. It fulttered and went down... I watch where it went. After nobody went to even close to wher eit was, I walked out strait line to it.. picked it up and marched a Full 100 yards back to the heli reckage.... It was the only part that was undamaged on that Heli. A guy named Roland was flying. He was not even doing any aerobatics to speak of.. only flying level when it happened.

That blade went 75 yards in the blink of an eye, then fluttered and decelerated in the last quarter.. or somthing liek that.... I would sooner be shot with a .22 than have been hit with that!

After seeing this twice, it is really hard for me to stand next to a Hovering heli with confidence... it just urks me, and Im a pretty fearless guy.. I always find myself standign BEHIND the pilot instead of next to him. Odds are low, but DAMN!
