Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Worthwile Rappy upgrade (metal blade grips)

This is the first raptor 30 upgrade that actually caught my eye - and that is metal blade grips. I have a pile of plastic blade grips that have the ball links screw broken off in them. It didn't seem safe to try to drill it out so I just keep a supply of them around.

But at almost $50 vs $10 for a pair of plastic ones i am not sure its worth it - except maybe for aggrevation avoidance.

Other than that I can't see the point in most rappy 'upgrades' - unless you have a weakness for pretty bits. but i have to admit the CNC headbutton from heliproz is pretty cool :-)

Yeah you might be right on that Greg! If the head, mixing base, swash, are tight and built to stay that way, I might jump on the bandwagon myself. I'll have to see if Dr. Scoles is gonna be available for some demo time soon.

Mine is only 32 flights old, but it is good as new. The washout base has the copper collar in it so it won't be sloppy like the Raptor is. Everything is very tight and looks good! Feel free to jump on the bandwagon

Metal Raptor 30 Grips

I have the metal grips on my 46 and they are great. I think they're worth the cost. I was sick of the slop in mine. I put brand new grips on it (plastic) and it didn't help... Bit the bullet and got the metal ones and I can tell you personally these have ZERO slop radially or laterally. They look really good too.

I have to point out one thing. Don't think that getting metal grips will prevent your ball link screw from breaking. I broke one Sunday. It should have been a lot worse but I got lucky. My tail pitch for let go in flight about 100 feet up and I had to get on the THOLD quickly to stop the piroutteing. Anyway I got it coming down and it dropped off out of sight down behind a drop off. I had to guess the flare and hoped for the best.

I hiked down and found the heli on its side in knee deep grass and the only damage was the ball screw on the grip. It broke off flush with the metal standoff. I couldn't believe it, I figured it would have been a boom strike and broken blades at a minimum.

The grips are in 3 pieces. You have the main grip body, a back plate that has an arm that the balllink and standoff connects to. Mine broke where the ball screws into the standoff shaft. It is a very small thread and I gave it to a guy at my field who is a machinst and he wil try to extract it. I don't know if he will be able to get it out.

I will check with Stephen at Cyberheli for parts availability . It may be a good idea to have a few standoff shafts in your field box as it seems to be a weak point if the screws always break there.

Here's a photo of my 46 with the metal grips: http://raptordriver.rcplanet.com/im...ptor46Grips.jpg

Look at all that metal!

Is the performance increase from the metal worth the investment? I think the grips and mixing base maybe, but the cost of adding all the arms puts it over the top for me. Considering that the mechanics are flexing all over underneath is a pity. I'll leave it a flexible flyer 'til the woofing starts. Got to admit, nice eye candy though.

I have a couple of blade grips with the broken ball link screws in them. I think one of the worthy metal upgrades is the metal collective arm to really stiffen up and enhance collective precision.

One another note,, The Sceadu is a nice helicopter, BUT its still no Raptor in my opinion. There is one and only one Raptor. It made its case simply by the way it flies and of course price is a factor too. I'd think of adding a Sceadu to my fleet, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd go Raptor. Raptor fit and finish is awesome and the heli stays together flight after flight after flight. The sword in the stone, RAPTOR!
