I was concidering purchasing an Ion. After the prolong back orders of course!! Aside for the $3000 start up cost, is the ion worth it?

1. Performance
2. Flight times
3. Up grades
4 Part availiblity


This will be my third heli and I want a great one!!!
A list of performance recommendations would be greatly appretiated.

It's the best Heli I own!! I currently have two Raptor 50's, A Freya X-Spec with a OS 70 and now an Ion and it is the best of the bunch. As long as you don't crash you'll love the Heli. The power is incredible and - at least at our altitude - with the 700 G2 MAH blades it'll blow away the other 90 size heli's with OS 90's in them! Go buy one.

I have an entire fleet of Xcell’s, from the Pro2, Pro2K to Fury Expert and Fury Extreme and now the Ion.
I find the Ion the best flying machine of all of them. It’s consistent centre of gravity helps a lot, and the overall performance is outstanding, even compared to the Extreme. It’s clean, quiet and easy to get going.
I guess the only downside is the battery duration. You can maybe get a good 15-18 minutes per flight, and the beginning of the flight gives the best power. A charge after 15 minutes flying takes anything up to 1.5 hours per pack. If you have two chargers capable of charging 5S lipos then that’s not too bad, if you only have a single charger, then it’s a 3 hour charge.
Some people are charging the packs in series as 10S, but Thunder Power and MA strongly warn against this.

I’m very very glad I got one, and it’s the model I fly as often as I can.

So should I go with the 401 502 or the 601 gyro?
And how do you fell about the Air. 94758z servos.?
All recommedations will be considered!!

Jetta,

I use the 401/w9254 servo and it works great. It does have a few sort comings compared to the 601. The 401 sometimes in high speed backwards flight will not hold as well. Also when commanding a pirouette rate, it will not be as consistent.

In regards to servo’s the best is still the 9252 (awesome).

92 oz/inch touque

the air 94758z 6.0volts over the 4.8 I know!!!!
0.6 sec/ 60 degrees
115 oz/inch touque

Yep, I know the air 94758z have more speed and higher torque. But I am talking about reliability and proven performance on helis. Most every one I fly with uses the 9252 and have had no problems. Just my 2 cents worth.

You may get better power and flight times by switching to the 55 or 60 tooth layshaft gear [MA124-55 or 124-60]. If you are getting headspeeds in excess of 1900, you might want to switch.

Sure, you can fly hard 3D for maybe 8 to 10 mins, but at that stage the packs are not out. You can easily get another 5 to 8 mins doing more gentle stuff. That’s going to give you 15+ mins per flight.

If all you fly is 3D, then after 8 mins the performance drops off enough so you would want to stop and recharge.

I’m running two chargers concurrently also, but that’s not a normal config especially for someone getting in to electric for the first time.

Just to add my 2c worth, I would say that the Ion is a fantastic machine and that ctseaplane's comments are very honest. My own experience is that you can easily get 15 or more minutes of gentle flight (hovering or cruising around) but if you are working the heli hard with sustained, pitch-intensive 3D then you need to ease up at 8 minutes on 8000s and 61/2 minutes with the 6000s. I would also echo that there's very little warning of over-draining the batteries. If you detect any appreciable loss of RPM when manouevring, it's time to land. It all comes down to your own flying style and the best way to proceed is build up the duration in steps while monitoring the charge that is going back into the batteries and then settle on a flight duration that is draining 80%-90% of max capacity and no more.

One of the most reliable servos on the market is the 94758. Yes the Futaba is more popular but most of that is simply because its says Futaba. As for proven performance.... Alan Jr. and Danny Szabo have pretty much taken care of that.
