Hey orlee,

Who knows. Maybe a bad batch. I personally would not use 537's or 539's on the collective of a 60 size heli, especially if you are doing hard 3D ...... they probably would not make the grade.

Apart from the crash cost .......the worst is, the time it takes to get your confidence back.

Trevor.

lol, i was up and flying the very next day. As soon as i had my accident i went to my "raptor service center" and got all my parts. Im not into any 3D yet, just hovering around and practicing my nose-in, stuff like that. thats why i put them in. i knew better than to use them for 3d but oh well.... an expensive lesson well learned.

In this hobby, you get what you pay for, well for the most part. The 537 and 539 are cheap, low cost servos! That why Jr will pack them up with a radio. If you look, you will find Jr and Futaba will offer the same radio with different servos pre packed. Both have the cheap version and a more costly version.

Take Jr's new 9303, it can be bought with 811's or 8311's. The 811 equipped set is $599.00 and the 8311 set is $799.00. Why do they do that you ask? Well IMHO it's for the people who buy based on cost only and not looking to see if something is up to cut the mustard of their needs.

There are alot of people who will look at the $599 and say, "there ya go, I don't want to spend $799, it's a heli radio, those 811's will work in my heli". But what does that heli require? They don't seem to care, it's like there is $200 dollars saved that can be spent on bling. Next thing you know, it a nice looking, blinged out heli with the most important parts, the base of all control, being the "cheaper ones".

Heck, look at the specs:
DS-811,

Torque: 54.0 oz/in
Speed: .18 sec/60°
Dimensions: 0.75 x 1.49 x 1.52 in
Weight: 1.44 oz
Bearing: single
Motor Type: cored

If you thought digital servos were the exclusive domain of giant scale aerobatics airplanes and high-end helicopters, you'll be thrilled to know that JR has a digital servo for sport pilots. Benefiting from much of the same technology that goes into JR's premium digital servos, the DS811 Advanced Sport Digital Servo sets the standard in sport servos.
It is an excellent choice for sport applications, like 40- to .60-size pattern airplanes or .30-size CCPM trainer helis like the Venture™ 30CP. Matching it with a 4.8V battery pack yields an impressive 54 ounce inch of torque. Transit speeds are impressive too. With a 4.8V pack, the DS811 executes a 60-degree sweep in a brisk .18 seconds. Perhaps most impressive is that the DS811 offers all this extra performance for just a few bucks more than a standard non-digital sport servo, allowing anyone to enjoy the precise feel and unmatched accuracy of JR digital technology.

DS-8311,

Torque: 130 oz/in
Speed: .18 sec/60°
Dimensions: 0.75 x 1.54 x 1.36 in
Weight: 1.87 oz
Bearing: dual wide spaced
Motor Type: coreless

Created specifically for the demands of high-performance helis, the DS8311 provides a 125 oz/in of torque and a speedy .18 sec transit time. Its this strength and speed combined with JR's unrivaled digital technology that provides a feeling of precision in 3D flight that's more like thought control than radio control.

In short, you can't blame a product, good or bad run of them, if they are not up to the job to begin with. This isn't just the buyers fault either, I've seen too many times where LHS's will tell the purchaser, "heck ya, it's perfect for your needs". This usually is done just to get the sale and they figure if I stock the $799 radio then John Doe will just buy the $599 radio from my competition so why bother.

Don't come off the throttle untill you see your GOD!

After reading all the comments, I'm concerned with why they would put out a "Heli" radio with servo's they know won't work. I've got a 810G and was told that it wouldn't be good enough for my tail on my 30 Raptor. I have to be down to 50% gain before the wag goes away.

Raptor50 crash landed due AILERON SERVO FAILURE

My friend and I have both purchased Raptor 50s. He is using an older generation JR radio (511 servos) set whereas i purchased a new JR radio set with 537 servo's.

I have flown my Raptor for about 12-15 flights with no control problems whatsoever. After flying abrubt vertical manouvres (on the 2nd tank for the afternoon) and returning to a hover at about 5', the AILERON SERVO FAILED and the chopper rapidly rolled to the right impacting the ground quite heavily, but luckily avoiding a rotor strike. End result was some bent flybars, and a massive loss in confidence with my kit.

TO my surprise, my friend stated he had his throttle servo fail on him mid flight a week prior to my accident. My failure seems a little different to the posts in here, as my servo had jammed, and upon wiggling it free post incident, it returned to semi-normal operation. By semi-normal, i have since realised the servo is not smooth in operation as the others are (i'm not sure if it was like that pre-incident, but i'd guess that was the case). Eg. When i move the stick slowly to left or right, it 'jags' slightly whereas the other servos are nice and smooth. As for whether this existed as a hint that the failure was iminent, I don't know, but i since use it as a preflight check.

I replaced the aileron servo with the different model servo that had failed on my friends (511) and managed to replicate the failure by moving the stick very slowly until i noticed one of the 'jags' and then wiggled the stick slightly (simulating small movements in the hover) and the jam occurred again. No matter how hard i tried with my original failed servo or his failed servo thereafter, i couldnt seem replicate the jam, but i know it would happen again if i used them again.

I thought it was just a remote, one off chance that thing could happen, but upon searching forums it appears that this problem is quite common with JR servos on the raptors. I'm seriously looking at replacing the JR servos with a more trusworthy brand as recommended on raptortechnique. Thank god the failure occurred in a low however and not a vertical manouvre! (though, i would be nice if it didnt happen at all!)

Regards from Oz,
Rob

my first crash was due to a servo failure on the tail of my R30...

Had a futaba 9250 on teh tail..worked great till i came out of a high speed turn and the tail seemed very slow to straighten out. Started to slow down and the heli started spinning like a top. Had to keep up the speed till i could decide what to do..

End result was a crash that did a serious number to the chopper. Need to send that servo in to get it replaced.

JR 537 digital servo failure

I lost aileron control while hovering in the yard. Tested the reciever with a new servo and it worked fine. this has me nervous now. Guess i need to look into new servos. I have never had any problems with JR for the last 10 years. Iam new and do not want to bust my raptor if i can help it. BH

I've used JR537 on my raptor for 2 1/2 years now with no problems.
After reading about the failures I do want to change them for a better servo now.

I used to burn the motors out in my model car VERY fast on the throttle if the motor got stalled. Holding the brake on + hard ,used to kill them very fast.

I agree with you get what you pay for, but it could be a set up issue as well.

JR NES 537 Servos

I had 5 new JR nes 537 servos in a Hangar 9 Tango 40 about 6 weeks ago and crashed due to the plastic gears stripping in one of the aileron servos. These were the first JR products that I have ever purchased and will be the last. I am going back to my Futaba S148 servos that my Dad purchased ~20 years ago and are still going strong. It just goes to show that price does not equal quality.

54oz servos in a Rappy 50....Yikes...double Yikes...
