3d whith woodies are no prob in itself. but u migth come out of tracking in a manuver, and that migth cost u the heli to crash. carbon and fiberglass blades keep better tracking. thats why we use them for 3d and F3C

Yes, I know this. Thats why I have carbons on my 50 and 60 and have carbons on the way for the 30, I basically made a typical beginner set up with my blade and electronics, (i.e. using 10 dollar servos all around even on tail) to prove to people that you dont need a REALLY expensive heli to do 3D, my raptor 30 is really fun to 3D, no pucker factor whatsoever.

UPDATE:

Another failed JR539 servo, but no crash: A friend of mine also purchased a Jr radio set which came with JR539's a short while ago

The servo packed up on the throttle, yes of all places, the motor completely dead....

This happened in flight, however he could still land the heli safely but the servo was a gonner. This happened on a Venture 30 - a JR heli ??-

Now it seems that even the throttle is too much for the 539.....

If you cant use it on the throttle then I suppose you cant use it at all.....

Other reports came in on Jr servo's failing on airplanes as well, I dont have the details but the guys at the field are having a bad hair month with these servo's.....

It seems that all the failing servo's, from what I could gather, is new
so maybe this is, a bad batch......very bad batch...

i just had the roll servo quit on me on my r60v2 today. it peaked out to the rigth and landed on the side. this was a Hitec HS 5625 digital servo that is a relatively expensive servo. ive been using these since they came to the market in different helis and planes, and this servo had only about 100 crash free fligths since it was new and i put it into the rappi.

These things can happen, you cant completely be shure that any servo will last forever. but i had hoped it to last a bit more than 100 fligths though. the parts brken on the heli is not expensive. about half of what the servo itself costs. thank good it was a ratpor, and not a JR vigor or something like that.

For the interest of those who have JR 539 servos in their helis I would suggest you change them soon because about two months ago a guy at our club crashed his Raptor 50 using a JR 539 servo on the aileron. He said the heli just kept on moving to the right until it hit the ground, luckily he was only about 1m off the ground so only had to replace the tailboom and new blades.Afterwards he checked the servo and it wouldn't move or respond but remianed in its position.i thought it was bad luck but about 3 weeks ago a guy at our club had the same servo in his 120 size Ultra Stick and this servo which was one of the aileron servos also remained in the last position until the plane came rolling all the way into the ground. After the crash it still wouldn't move so those JR 539's are really dodgy.I can understand one failing but the fact that 3 or more have failed makes me worried and I doubt its coincidence.the servos just seem to get stuck and one can't move it when it plugged in so it is not the motor burning nor the gears stripping becasue the guy with the Raptor opened his servo and checked it out.

Anyway I just thought let everyone know, so those who haven't had any problems may be able to prevent them.

New Heli Pilot

My wife is getting me the Raptor 50 V2 SE for Chrismas from Only Raptor.com I am just getting the Bird/Engine combo...Can anyone lead me in the right direction to the rest of the parts I should get as far as brand name is concerned. I will not buy JR servos thats for sure. Does anyone have a prefrence on trainning aids? I have been practicing for the past year with FMS the free download online and the Great Planes control I got off ebay. Is there any kind of device that will hold the Heli in place while practicing movements? Also could someone recomend a good DVD about helis for setup and flying.

Thanks,

From what I could gather from reading around, th postings in this thread will give you a pretty good indication. For more info you will find many discussions on runrider about different servo's.

But I found a site with a guy who's given reports on some servo's he flew, this can also be of help so check it out:

http://www.raptortechnique.com/servos.htm

He lists the servo's and the qty of flights he has had before a crash.

if you have the cash, futaba is a very good way to go, I have heard plenty of good about them, everywhere.....

Well its happened AGAIN!!!

Well here is my story,

I just finish setting up my new (new to me) R60 and for the time being I installed some brand new NES-537 servos that I got from a purchase of a new JR 6102 radio. So just to get the heli in the air I used these servos and since I used them with no problems on my Caliber I thought they would be OK for now. I hover my heli around a bit to get it trimmed out and all of a sudden I loose aileron control. Yep, my R60 hit the floor from about 5' up and leaning sideways speeding up as it hit the floor....SMACKBOOMCRASH - cry

After the "chicken dance" I walk upto my R60 and see that my receiver and battery were completely knocked out of my heli and thrown about 20' away. I was flying it without the canopy for testing. So, I go get the receiver and battery, they looked like they were in good shape, I walk back and I plug everything back in and notice I dont have aileron control. So I think , Maybe the receiver took a hit and that particular channel doesnt work. I switch servos and the channel works so its the 537 servo that failed.

Total cost of repairs including new carbon fiber blades and four brand NEW DS811 digitals so tha this doesnt happen again, about $400.00

I suspect that something it going on with JR's quality control..... I hope its just the lower end servos and not their 811's

The NES-537 does not have strength for a Raptor 60. The reason it failed was due to using the wrong servo for the job. In this case I would have to say it is pilot error, not JR's fault.

You should reconsider using the DS811's on a 60 size ship. They work fine on 30 and 50 size ships but they aren't much stronger then the 537's only 13.7 (oz in) more. You should consider using stronger servo's. The DS8311 would be a good choice it is a 130 (oz in) servo and is recommended for heli use by JR.

im not into 3D or anything like that "YET". I basically fly around and hover and stuff..... so i think that the 811's will be ok for now. either way i already bought them and its to late to return....

i had the option of getting Hitec 645 (i think was the #) but when i was holding the servo i noticed that they had a tiny bit of play in the gearing (metal gears - i checked them all and they had the play) but they werent digital. So i figured the 811's would be a better purchase since they are digital and have almost the same strength as the Hitec..

Your local hobbby shop can get you a radio with the servos that you want. It is called JR Flex equip. You might have to wait a extra few days for it to get arrive but it is an option that is overlooked ALOT. You can get the JR servos that you want and won't have 4 or 5 servos that you will not use laying around.

We do it all the time.

Question:

Raptor Rulezz earlier in this thread suggested using futaba 3001 servos if you go onto a limmited budget.

He now had good experiences with these servo's, can anyone share simmilar experiences? Would you use them? Did you hear of failures on these servo's on 30 or 50 size heli's?

If you are on a shoestring budget, what would you use?

I have replaced my JR servo's with hitec 545B servo's, however some guys feel that even they are too expensive and want to do it really cheap.

Can anyone enlighten on their experiences.

if this servo is so rubbish why do they ship it with the better radio's?

doesnt make much sense...

They even ship with the JR pcm9x helicopter radio, it gets more confusing......

Hell alone knows why someone will want to buy such an expensive radio (for helicopters) to put the servo's into anything but a helicopter!!

Because the radios works for planks as well. And those cheap servos work well in a small to moderate sized plank.

BAD 8700 Gs

HELLO: about two weeks ago I sent Horizon Hobbies two 8700 Gs servos for warranty repair, and they call me today saying that the servos had oil inside and warranty was void that i should used them for parts, new servos were $ 125.00 . hello! 8700 s are tail servos they get iol all the time, servos only lasted about 11 months I spent all this money on two jr 5000 gyros with 8700 for nothing cause 401 with 9254 works the same and is half the money .NO MORE JR FOR ME

I've done some searching here and found plenty of good comments on the futaba S3001 servo's.

Some guys have been flying them for 2 years no problem. The performance is not that of the 9252 digitals but if you're looking for a cheap reliable servo the S3001 is the way to go!!

You can get them for around $13, so that seems like a great deal for someone on a budget...

Thought you'de like to know...

Been using 539 servos all round on my Rappy 50 v2 except on the tail (NES 810) for over two years now and have flown out 147 tanks of fuel on this heli .....never had any problem. I use this heli to try out new manouvers before I try them on my 90 size heli and it is thrashed around in the air .

It has never missed a beat. Many other pilots at my field use 537 and 539 servos on the helis that they use for messing around and trying out new moves ....and use the expensive digital servos on their top of the range helis. I know people that use 537's and 539's with a GV-1 on the throttle.... and that govenor sure works the throttle servo.

Another mystery ???

Trevor.

maybe its a bad batch of 537's. i know that my crash costed me $400+ dollars (including carbons and digital (4) 811's) but it seems to fly better now so its all gooooooood!
