e-Miniature Aircraft Furion - Razor - Ion-X > Questions about battery packs, governors, and hovering

I had a talk with one of the sponsored MA pilots at my field and learned several new things about the Ion. I was hoping that maybe some of you could elaborate on these things. I have my Ion on backorder at Heliproz, and can't wait for it!

Battery packs
Are the MA124-160 - IX8000 battery packs that MA is waiting on Thunderpower generation 2 or 3? I've heard that with generation 3 packs, the problem of decreased performance after 4 minutes or so is nonexistant. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Governors
Also, I've been reading electric forums for a long time and have owned several micro electric helicopters. I've always heard that using the governor built into the speed controller was a bad idea because it's hard on the motor and also results in decreased flight times. I'm not too familiar with the Helimaster-77 (or whatever it is that the Ion comes with), but is its built in governor any better than the traditional Schulze, Hacker, and Castle controller governors made in the last few years?

If it isn't, would a GV-1 do any better at regulating the throttle? Is it possible to set the GV-1 to a higher percentage of tolerance for error... say 5-6% instead of 1%?

Hovering
Finally, I'd like to use my Ion for hovering class I and II - but I've heard that the ESC can actually burn up if it's not run close to wide-open throughout most of the flight. I'm not sure what % open would be required for a 1400rpm hover, but I'm sure it's nowhere near the top. How have all of you Ion owners approached this so far? Lower voltage battery packs perhaps? Or is there any way to ensure more effecient cooling of the ESC? Alternatively, is there another ESC that would be able to handle this better than the stock MA one?

Thanks for reading! And extra thanks in advance for answering. : )

Regear

Think you`d have to regear with lower gearing to do that. You`re suppose to run 80% throttle and looking at mine you would have to get a couple of different plates where the secondary gear bolts on cause it`s non adjustable to put in a bigger main gear

Hello Danny

Yes, I think a regear is probably in order for you. But I'm not sure we can get all the way down to 1400 rpm...that's pretty slow. Just going to a 55 tooth gear will cut about 100 rpm of the stock headspeed and a 60 tooth will cut about 250.

Alternately, you could run an 8S pack. This would probably get you in the 1600 max rpm range which might work out well for what you want to do. Contact Thunder Power directly for these packs.

There are a few individuals out there who are having good success witht he GV-1 on the Ion-X. Try to get a hold of Shannon Davis over on heli freak. He's probably the best source of info on this so far.

The speed control should be run at 80% or higher. If it is run slower, and it heats up, it will shut off and you'll be auto-ing down. For hovering stuff, this may be ok...try at your own discretion. But don't go into the sky with a lower than 80% throttle setting.

Hey meerkat - hell of a machine to learn on! Would have frightened the pants off me as a first taste of hovering.

....

Thanks for getting back to me, chriss. 1600rpm max rpm on an 8s pack sounds about exactly what I want for hovering purposes. This sounds like a much better option than regearing. As goes for the GV-1, I'll take your advice and ask Shannon about it. I figured that it would function just fine but I was wondering if it was going to have the same adverse affect on the flight time that ESC govs traditionally have.

Nick, the Ion is actually going to be my fourth heli. I've been flying for a while but never competed. My goal is to be one of the first people out there in class I and II flying with a 90-sized electric!

At this point it looks like I'll have an 8s pack for hovering and a 10s pack for the fun stuff
