Scale Model RC Helicopters > Texas Heli Heatwave Top Gun Qualifier for 2003

On July 19th, 20th, and 21st we will be having the annual Texas Heli Heatwave with an AMA 518 rulebook contest that will be the first TG 2003 Qualifier. I will have a flyer to post here soon and according to the CD Chris Berardi there will be 3 maybe 4 full size with the big one being a full size Army BlackHawk. I'm sure it will be run similiar to last year (Nigel Revel is the head judge for scale and I will clarify this with him) where you do have to fly the box and circles in front of you but the flybar rule is only discounted in static (unless the full size has the same) and not discounted at all in the flying. Bring what you got everyone is welcome to fly any scaler and if your not comfortable with the mans fly it anyway and you will be judged accordingly. Also you can enter more than one machine. Last year Steve Higgins did offically win both 1st and 2nd place (although he was gracious enough to only take one trophy) so that is acceptable. We had about 9 guys last year and it was a great event. Also Len Mount will be here once again from England and I do believe he is judging also. Plus we have all the other standard events, novelty, autos, 3D and drag racing on Sunday. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen cause it is a scorcher! Last year we had this life saving misting tents, knowing Chris they will be in full force again. If you have any questions you can email me and I can send you either Nigel or Chris's email address. Your rules are hopeless

You might want to take another look at your proposed rules. They are even worse than current 518 rules!

For example, the total flying marks are 50 and the static is 600!!

I strongly suggest you look at the proposed 518 rules on http://scalehelicopters.org/ as they will work as you want them to.

If you want to change these rules at an AMA sanctioned event then you will need an AMA waiver

Peter,

The 518 rules use K factors to multiply the scores that are given for each individual manoeuvre. If you take all the scores from the three judges plus the K factors (and two rounds of flying) you end up with a 50:50 split between the static and flying.

Hey Nigel,

I for one couldn't care a less if our competition is exactly the same as the AMA NATS or Top Gun? If you can fly the mans we have then that alone should qualify you for any other competition out there. To heck with changing rules, applying for waivers, blah, blah, blah just to satisfy people that weren't there last year (and probably won't be this year).

What we had last year was one of the best scale events every put on! I purpose that we run the event the exact same way we did last year (except for we need a flight line controller help us keep the flying moving). If it ain't broke don't fix it..

The fact is you would have to add all of the '01 AMA NATS pilots & '02 TOP GUN pilots together to total the number of entries we had "flying" at last years Heli HeatWave! Maybe these other events should change to our rules instead of the other way around?

The other events mentioned have enough problems to work out besides the rules. The Heli HeatWave runs smooth. We set up our flying area the week before the event, not the day of. We have a meeting between all parties involved the week before so all officials would be on the same page. We don't "borrow" competitors from other events to judge scale helicopters. Our pilots don't have to duck during their flying routine to avoid being decapitated. There is no reason what so ever that we need to change anything to mimic these other events.

Hello,

We have updated the Scale contest notes based on comments received.

http://www.fwthunderbirds.com/PDF%2...escale_rev1.pdf

The only intended change from the 518 rules is on the '360 fly around ' which is flown in front rather than around the pilot.

The notes are only intended to encourage participation!

Please do not reply to this post...comments to narevill@myfirstlink.net

Thanks

TG invite

Seneca,
The THHW is a great time from what I've heard from folks that have attended. If you go, you'll never regret it. However, nobody in that group is in any way connected to Top Gun. Invitations are extended only by the Top Gun Contest Director(that would be me) or the committee (Len, myself, and Peter) in case of an appealed turn-down. Nobody can "see that you get an invite"-not even me-without the proper resume and all.
For complete info on the TG meet, go to Peters' Rules/Regs site. It has the info on all three events at TG for next year as well as telling how to get invited. This is the right way to do it, and there's a link to my e-mail right in the text of that site.
I look forward to hearing from you.

One more time-the THHW(hope I got that right) is a TG qualifier because it's an AMA-sanctioned event and the TG rules require that a potential TG entrant enter and complete an AMA-sanctioned event. It doesn't have to be identical to TG, it doesn't have to be 518, heck-it doesn't even have to be a scale meet. The pilot can even place dead last-but he/she MUST complete the entire meet.
The whole point is to assure the TG CD that the folks he's inviting can build TG-quality scalers AND can fly under the rigors of competitive events flown in front of a crowd. That info is all included in the resume that a TG-hopeful submits to the TG CD.
The THHW is a qualifier simply because they have met that requirement. That's how TG is set up, that's how the qualification is set up. They're FINE!!! Nigel et all have done it right from the way it looks to me. If you have a doubt, ask them to post a sanction number here. If they do, the event is sanctioned and it's a qualifier.
One other thing, and this is an easy one. If you're going to compete in an event with an eye to requesting a TG invite, you'll need a copy of the participants' list that you signed when you registered. The CD will have it and should be able to mail you a copy when he catches his breath after the meet.
Thanks, now go to Texas and have fun! Go to Darrell's in September and have a blast, come to the NATS and do it, come to IRCHA and do it, then come to TG next year and see if we've gotten any better at that one-I'm sure trying hard to get that done.
