Hi, I'm a Computer Engineering student at University of Central Florida and I was hoping someone here might be able to answer a few questions I have. I'd really appreciate any help and information that can be given.

I'm working on a research project and I hope to build a guidance package for a RC Heli making it fully autonomous but I'm having trouble finding the basic information I need to know if it is even possible to do with the kits available.

Question 1: What kind of lifting capacity can I expect from one of these helicopters? I read today that a 30 may be able to lift some small packages but a 50 or larger is what would be required to do anything serious. Does anyone have experience or opinions about this?

Question 2: I'm assuming the thrust can be varied but how is this done on non electic motors? (unfortunately I'm not a mechanical engineering student)

Question 3: What radio frequencies are commonly used with the kits? I've not seen any information regarding that.

Question 4: Assuming I use a different method of control besides radio (likely wifi with the embedded onboard system) is there any easy way to interface with the servos / controls on the heli?

Thanks for your help,

Jonathan

here goes...

I will be kind enough to give a start.

1 varies much due to engine and blade configuration. for a 30 wild guess 4lbs, for a 50 maybe 6-7 for a 60 size 9-12lbs for a 90 and gasser size like the benzin more like 14-20 and up.

2. Goto a library and read about heli mechanics take notes...too much to even begin every heli is similar.

3. depends on where in the world you are. 72mhz in the US. like 50 channels

4. read on wifi as a search on RR. read about NRI as well.

I have seen a very skilled pilot use a 30 size Raptor with OS 32 lift a one gallon jug of water which is 8 pounds.

OS-50 size Raptor will lift 8 pounds no problem. Now thats in Las Vegas. If you try it in Reno where the air is less it may not lift it. Don't know because I havent seen it.

I hope you are a grad student. This isn't something most undergrads can do.
