| but it is a remote photograph so it almost fits in here, and I thought the photographers might enjoy it!
I finally received a new astronomical CCD camera on Friday. Of course it was totally clouded over by sunset, (isn't that the way it always works?) but I had to image something, so pointed the telescope across the way at the distant houses on Pelican Point.
I summed 4 images of 5-seconds each, with dark frames and bias frames to match. The wind was blowing a bit so the palm trees are a little soft, but overall I was happy with the results. By eye all you can see are the two streetlights, it is amazing what these sensitive cameras can do with an everyday scene. Almost looks like it was done with an infra red filter in the middle of the day!
Details: SBIG STL-11000XM camera, William Optics 105mm f/6 (650mm focal length), APO scope, no reducer or flattener, minimal processing for the test. The filters haven't arrived yet, so it is monochrome only. 16 bit-depth per pixel (yes, you read that right!) compared to a normal 8-bit per pixel image. Thermally cooled camera.
Reduced for the bandwidth impaired: (800 x 534, 100k)
