but it is a remote photograph so it almost fits in here, and I thought the photographers might enjoy it!

I finally received a new astronomical CCD camera on Friday. Of course it was totally clouded over by sunset, (isn't that the way it always works?) but I had to image something, so pointed the telescope across the way at the distant houses on Pelican Point.

I summed 4 images of 5-seconds each, with dark frames and bias frames to match. The wind was blowing a bit so the palm trees are a little soft, but overall I was happy with the results. By eye all you can see are the two streetlights, it is amazing what these sensitive cameras can do with an everyday scene. Almost looks like it was done with an infra red filter in the middle of the day!

Details: SBIG STL-11000XM camera, William Optics 105mm f/6 (650mm focal length), APO scope, no reducer or flattener, minimal processing for the test. The filters haven't arrived yet, so it is monochrome only. 16 bit-depth per pixel (yes, you read that right!) compared to a normal 8-bit per pixel image. Thermally cooled camera.

Reduced for the bandwidth impaired: (800 x 534, 100k)

Actual size: (4008 x 2672, 800k)

Sorry if someone thinks it is too off-topic...

Enjoy,
Greg

64-bit?

Greg,
It is an interesting topic, despite being off-topic.
Do you really need 64 bit of color depth? I am just curious why. I am sure it is not a cheap camera - why pay for extra resolution while you averaging the output anyway?

Val.

Val:

Even scarier - it is not color, instead, like most astronomy cameras, it is grayscale. You take multiple grayscale images through different colored filters to get color. This gives it three times the resolution, not having to split up every three pixels for red, green, and blue.

On your comment on averaging - the images are usually not averaged, they are summed. This is the best way to increase the signal-to-noise ratio when imaging very, very faint objects. Then you just have to make sure to get perfect alignment of every image - not too hard when aimed at a house, imagine tracking a star cluster for an hour or so!

I would average (median, actually) a few images if there was something I wanted to get rid of - a satellite or airplane in an otherwise good shot.

But I misspoke - not 64 bit, it is 16 bit - 8-bits = 256 levels, 16 bits = 65,536 shades of gray per pixel. I re-edited the original post to correct - the software works in 64-bits to enable you to sum many images together without hitting a limit.

Greg,

I don't remember giving you permission to take a picure of my house
(Don't I wish)

Nice shot.

BTW, I made a video of your Camera Ship in flight. The raw footage was 2 GB so I converted it to MPEG 2 and burned it on a CD for you......148 MB is probably too big to post here or e-mail.

I'll drop by your office unless I see you at the field first.

Dave

I would really like to check out the video if you can host.
