Hi,
I'm just getting into the world of arial photography from helicopters (Maxi-Joker). I wuld like to know what are the ways to control the camera zoom and shot function from the ground (not by puting servos on the switches). I saw that remote-i sels electronic device that conects to the Lanc input on sony camcorders. Is this device any good? are there other electronic devices on the market that conects to the rx and control the basic functions of video and still camers?
Thanks Eran.

A lot depends on the particular camera which you own.

As to the LAN-C interface, I have not tried that so I can't tell you how it works (or doesn't). But your camera would have to support the LAN-C interface for you to be able to use it. I think some video cameras have it. I know my Sony has a LAN-C interface.

My fixed camera does not have any inputs for controlling Zoom, however I can control the shutter and cause the camera to focus and actuage the shutter after the focus is done electronically.

My camera has a mechanical zoom, so I would have to use a servo with a belt drive of some sort.

For an electronic controlled zoom, you may have to modify the camera to accept an external electronic control.

For photographs, I can't imagine changing the zoom too often. You can simply land and change settings and then take off again. I tend to set my focal length before I take off and fly that way. Most of my flying is at full wide angle (about 28mm) otherwise I have to fly too high to frame a shot. A wider angle helps to minimize the affects of vibration also.

If anyone has experience with the LAN-C to RC interface, I would like to hear about it too. I was considering it.

I just baught the Digisnap 2000 from harbortronics just add the .com and check it out. They have an R/C mod that allows you to control zoom and the shutter. You need to buy switches to conect to a open chanel on your reciever, I am buying them from rc-flysoft just add the .com. I think this is going to work great. I have tested the digisnap with my Nikon 8700 and it works great! I have not gotten everything together to get it on the chopper yet, I will let you know. I can say that it is made for this type of application and the tech support from harbortronics via email was fantastic! You can also download the manual to see how everything works before you buy. Send them an email with questions I think they will get back with you very fast.
