Safety - RC Helis are not toys > the witch glitch in e-helis

I'v been building up the new humming bird CP with an ikarus pico board installed (receiver, gyro, mixer). 3 seperate times, with my "safety" switch on my Eclipse 7(Flt. Cond, or my throttle cut set to neg. 25% which kills the motor and allows me to adjust my servo throws). I was up close working when a glitch occured. Fortunatly I was able to get out of the way and not get a paddle in the eye. This got me thinking because these machines are getting more scary to me by the day.
How about an external witch switch that controls the power to the motors. Basically having another micro servo (added wt. but worth it) to manually kill any motor control, regardless of simply doing close up work or if your speed controller fries on the fly.
Does anyone know if this type of switch exists because electrics don't turn off easily and I can't imagine some innocent person watching a small little helicopter with carbon fiber blades loose control and cause 6 stitches to the face!
Thanks,
Mars--->

Do a search on the eclipse, a bloke in our field had that happen also and I cant remember the cause but it might have been something to do with 1/2 steps in some of the curves

One safe to test servos on e-helis

Hello, One safe way to test the radio setup without fear of the motor turning is to use your old reciever pack that came with your radio kit. By using this small battery you are safe because its power can not get to the motor. Just plug it into an empty channel or un plug your BEC. Then you can check, test or adjust your setup. I use this meathod on my e-helis and it is safe.

Hope this helps, John

You can also remove motor pinions or move the motor so that the pinion no longer meshes with the main gear.

I found that if my TX antenna touches any metal of the heli I get a glitch that turns the motor on briefly, so there is definitely a safety issue here.

I wonder if using a DSC cord fixes anything? (My guess is it should remove the danger of glitches). DSC doesnt work with all receivers though.

wouldnt it be far simpler to fit an inline spdt switch to cut tail and rotor power?

would doing this damge the ouputs in the reciever? or are they protected for this?

kill switch

I have a pitts that is twenty pound full with a 50cc gas in it and I put a remote kill on it .For the very reason of 18" prop on a 3 horse motor will tear someone up good.Greatplanes make the kill switch, you could probly use it to cut the main power wire on you heli.It is a micro switch that a servo operates.

Glitches are a good reason you should have connectors between your motors & ESC's. They are reasonably lightweight and very convenient for purposes like your trying to achieve.

Some others who have posted here obviously don't understand the importance of working on your heli while powered up..... There are some issues that cannot be resolved without juice flowing to components.... like servos issues, swashplate throws, etc...

I use Dean's (micro) connectors between my speed control and motor, I simply unplug the motor when i am making adjustments, etc.....Loosening the motor to move the pinion out of contact is a hassle, the connector makes it easy and SAFE!!!

Deans micro between esc and motor. Just unplug it. Besides it makes swapping components so much easier.

Good Luck,

Mike
