If one does an inverted auto, what is the most effective way to get it upright again before landing?

I did one this weekend and rolled the heli out before touchdown, but lost too much head speed in doing so, and crashed. I see that most people do a half loop before landing, is that better?

Thanks

A roll is the most effective way to exit from inverted. Just before you exit from inverted make sure you spool your blades up so that they have enought inertia to get through the roll. It is very important that you learn how to manage your collective. Just before I roll out I increase my descent and then move my collective stick closer to zero just before I roll this usually will speed the head up to allow for the roll. I have a mpeg in photo & movie section that you can look at.

with aileron vs. with elevator

I think rolling out is a little bit easier than flipping. Collecitve management seems to be a little bit more critical with the flip method. But, that may just be because I have more practice with rolling.

If you're descending inverted and nose-first, it might help to give a little bit of forward elevator before rolling out. Bringing up the nose gets the air going through the rotor more (as opposed to across the rotor), and that helps speed up the rotor a bit. Bring the collective closer to zero as you do so, that also helps speed the rotor. You should be able to hear the rotor speed up when you do this.

Oh, and if your heli lacks a driven tail, stay away from the half-flip approach. Coming down backward with no tail rotor control is a whole new challenge.

inverted auto

I saw a guy do it twice with a belt driven Freya. Inverted nose in, flipped forward to land.

i have not done one yet , but by looking at how other proz doing it and considering the theory of a regural auto - i'd say a forward flip would by the most effective one, as you would use the forward speed to do an inverted flare, and then flip to continue your backward upright auto.

while the roll can not take advantige of forward speed to the extend the a flip can. i think roll has to be managed very very carefully to preserve the energy of the rotor.

my 2¢.

I've been doing this for a while now. Rolling out is preferable for me but as previously mentioned it is about good collective control and correct cyclic timing.

Done smoothly a half roll can take very little head speed out. However I still screw it up a bit and use an excessive amount ( but not too much yet ) and you just need to pick it up a bit before you land.

Be careful of the wind conditions when you try this manouvre. Too much and you have to start to close overhead and that is difficult to keep good orientation and control. Too little can make it more difficult to get a good flare out.

Maintaining sensible forward flight speed throughout will help through the manouvres due to air through the blades. Make sure you keep the blades tight in the holders in case you do slow the head speed down to dangerous levels. You need to ensure that a blade doesn't fold back.

Practice slowing the blades right down to super slow levels and then spooling them up again, this will give you confidence.
