Gasser Model RC Helicopters > homemade canister muffler

I was talking to a buddy at the field today and we started discussing what it would take to build a canister muffler to fit a custom application like a scale ship. A muffler is nothing but a baffled (if that) can and it seems like I could weld up a box with baffles in it, that way you could have your inlets and outlets wherever you want. I even thought about using that fiberglass sound deadener in it like you use in a dirt bike exhaust. Has anyone ever seen or tried such a thing? I know it would not work on a glow engine because the oil would saturate the fiberglass but I think it might work on a gasser.

I am not a mechanical engineer, but I have fooled around a little with race cars. I am not real sure about the smaller engines but I think there is a little math involved when you are dealing with exhaust. You have to take into consideration the back pressure that a muffler produces when an engine is running. Too much back pressure or not enough could mean the difference between a crappy running engine, or ruining one all together. The inner dimensions and flow rate are pretty critical to an engine being happy. But I would be interested in knowing if you could build a custom muffler. Especially like you say for scale apps, not to mention having one that was much quieter.

Yea the back pressure is the big thing to consider but when you think about it look at how many different mufflers there are out there. You see little stock box type mufflers, headers and canisters like the MA muffler and big tuned pipes with expansion chambers.

Should work fine as long as there is a tuned expansion part then the silencer. As a matter of fact I was looking into buying a TSK Blackstar GS a while ago and it had an exhaust much as you are thinking of.

The custom exhaust was made like a full-on Pro Circuit pipe that curled round to a silencer under the tailboom. Very quiet and very powerful. The critical section is the expansion/tuned pipe part - as long as there is a decent bore in the muffler I can't see any major problems.
