Just got back from flying at my LONG time Local Planks field (flying my X-cell Gas) I beleive that will be the last time I go also!!
I have been getting "bad" vibes from a lot of the OLD guys at the field since I strickly started flying heli's, ya'll see where this is going?
Several of these OLD guys started balking today at me flying and I was flying my camera ship (slow and steady !!) so with out going into details, I told them I would not be back. How many of you heli flyers have delt with this before?
Thanks,
Brett Horton

Sounds like just about every heli flyer's experience who has switched over to the *right side from flying planks.

Heli's are glory stealers; the plank pilots can spend months on a plank building it and the crowd looking on wants to know when the heli is going to fly. It's happened to me personally at our field, there were many planks, from big birds down to 40 size, My Vigor CS was there and spectators were asking about the heli. The plankers were smoldering under the collar. Yep Glory Stealers!!!!!

At my field we refer to it as rotor envy. Airplanes are great, they give people who cant fly helis something to do.

Go back.

First are you a PAYING member of this club?
Is it an AMA sanctioned field?
IF so then you have every right to be there flying your MODEL AIRCRAFT.
If there are some guys giving you a bad time then take it to your club board and DEMAND they take action.

We have a few guys in our club that have a bone to pick with anything that is not fixed wing and flying forward 100% of the time.
They are picking on 3D planes and only time before they ATTEMPT to pick at my helicopters. (I fly helis 90% of the time)
Our club board has a strict policy. Adhere to the saftey rules of the field that are set forth by the body and saftey officer and things are golden.
You step out of line and you will be asked to fix the problem. Do that one too many times and you will be asked to leave the field.

One thing I have found at my predominantly plank field is to try and fit in as much as possible. Wait till there is only 1 or 2 planes up and in the hands of experienced pilots. Then try to follow the flow of traffice as much as possible.
Most of the plane guys will sit out and watch me fly instead of complaining. And I am BORING to watch.

Don't just run off to another field if you enjoy flying at this one. Make the club deal with the problems and keep on going.
The AMA has rules about running people out because they fly helicopters or some other form of aircraft that is not "liked" by a club.

Go back. Don't let the man stick it to you. Be polite. You let them win when you throw in the towel. Most of the old guys at my field can't even fly anymore, they just sit there and watch.

Thanks, John Cadwell

It is not my concern that they bicker, just that when I go to MY field and fly , I do it for two reason's, one, to set up and test my camera ship in a safe, controlled setting, and two, for relaxation. When these old farts just bicker and whin about anything that they do not aprove off then it takes the relaxation out of it. The funny thing is that most of the people that bitch don't even fly planks much less heli's!!
One of the club members who I am fond off came by about an hour ago to ask If I would reconsider staying a member, and demo fly at a flyin this weekend, but at this point I don't think I will.
Thanks guys

All the more reason

Brett,
All the more reason to fight them.
If it is just a few individuals making waves then THEY should be adapting not you.
Shame for you to loose a "comfortable" spot to test new equipment and train just because a couple people like to complain.

Sounds all to similar to our field.
We had a former saftey officer trying to make waves about 3D pilots working on the runway in a safe manner.
He picked on the wrong group as the club president with overwhelming support of the membership put a stop to his lame complaints.
He and his counterparts have since kept quiet.

I think you should enlist your friend and do the same with your club officers.
Do the demo. I got more support from the club after I flew a demo for our airshow last summer. Especially from the board.
Scratch their back.....they scratch yours kind of thing.

Old Farts

Don't feel bad it is very much the same at my field.

The only one's who bitch are the one's who do not fly and/or the ones who have been flying for a long time and 7 times out of 10 can not make it around the field with out a major crash!! These are also the same ones who need to implement a new rule at every meeting!

Go to my web page and click on the ultimate and if your browser will let you zoom in on the tail and look at my decal that I have on all of my planes. http://www.rnlinc.com/rc/rc.htm

I fly both rotary and fixed I fly a lot and rarley crash -- There is a strong resentmet with the have and the have nots.

And yes my turbine Bell 230 steals the show every time --- even from my turbine fixed wing AV8R!!

Aren't helis great!!!

I had the same experience but to fix that problem, I brought other heli pilots to fly with me. Then I convinced some of the younger planks to give the heli a try. Time went by and half the planks are now flying helis and there are more heli pilots at the field now than there are planks.
Next year, I think we will have control of the flying field.

Good for you!

Pour them shoes out of concrete and stand firm.
If you had a good % of the club talking this way it would be time to find a new field, but one or two bad apples just means it is time to clean out the fridge so to speak.

Do the demo!!! You will really tick them off when all the visitors want to come look at your heli after the show.
Strap a video camera on there and do some video then re-show it. People will FLIP!

Brett,

Good on ya for changing your mind. You know you're not going to be everybody's pal, but in this case you did nothing wrong. You just showed up!
Those guys need to be knocked down a couple notches. We have guys like that at our field, but most of us speak up in just as loud a voice and speak some reason. At our last meeting, we had a proposal from one of the 'know-it-all's' who wanted to exclude non-club members. It only took one member to return fire, told him this wasn't a dictatorship and the club had been doing fine without his idea, etc.. You have as much right as anyone to fly a heli, gyroplane, glider, and so on.
Good for you staying with it!
(Rotor envy - I gotta remember that one!)

.

I might not be very good, but I'm fun to watch.

I'm old enough to be an Old Fart but am a Heli flyer. At our plank field we share air space with the plankers only when we are able to fly circuits. There is a hovering area for those that can't fly.
I join the others here and say hold your ground. Don't run away.
I too fly low & slow, trying to get 'scale' like. I won't say I am erratic but usually the plankers land and go for coffee when I take off.

Thanks guys,
I am going to fly the demo saturday and continue to fly at the field I will just ignore the Old Farts, as they have been this way as long as I known them.
Just about every one else at the field, who do not fly helis, has expresed there interest to me to stay at the field and fly, so I wont let the few persuad me.
Thanks all

Good Choice Copterviews... Our club is predominant fixed - three years ago 100 plank, two helis. Now 70 planks and 22 heli... Get the picture. It is all from being polite, planning, and conversation. Hang in there it will get better.

There are two different types of plankers.
One type like helis, and the ones that don’t.
The ones that do enjoy the hobby and the entertainment of the helis are also big enough people to admit that they can’t fly helis. It’s just not for them, you have to respect them for that.

On the other hand the ones that don’t like the helis are Ass holes and feel threatened by the heli pilots because we belittle them, or so most of them feel that way
( they belittle them self’s) and for the few that are ignorant and self centered “don’t worry about it. If you had paid your dues you have just as much right at the field as the asses do and don’t let them push you off. And yes we are glory stealers (unintentional)

helicopters are different and intriguing this is what the general public likes to see. Also with the way most of the heli pilots are today even the novice heli pilots look like professionals compared to old hand planker flyers.
Most the time the plankers don’t feel like the top dogs when the heli pilots pull in so its easier to try to push us out then to accept us.
