I'm looking at the Nikon Coolpix 8700 and the Olympus c 8080 Wz.. I've been to Dpreview and they seem to really like the Olympus. I want something I can use in the air and with the family as well and both seem to be a nice match. I like the Nikon because I know I can get a fisheye lens attachment for it, I can use the Digisnap for the shutter, and I noticed a lot of people here use the 5mp Coolpix and have positive things to say about it. I would love to get the Digital Rebel but it doesn't have the AV out. Any suggestions or comments on a good 8 mp camera or SLR in that range?

Hey Bean

We just upgraded to the C8080 from a Son DSC-S75. Wow, what an upgrade! This Olympus is incredible! The weight definitely increases (about 1.6 pounds from 1.1 pound), but it is worth it. One thing nice about the Olympus is the construction. It's an all-metal body and feels SOLID. I played with the 8700 and it just didn't feel as stout. Of course the images are incredible.

The Olympus is a standard 52mm lens mount (and no adapter needed), so a fisheye or wide-angle is not a problem. I'm sure the Nikon is a good camera also, but the Olympus won out for me. Another handy thing is the video output is on the back of the camera instead of the side. Kind of handy for running your wires.

Anyways, there's my Olympus plug!

Bean..

I was told to stay away from SLR detachable lenses from a professional photographer, but we all have to take that with a grain of salt.. The reasoning he gave me was that once the internal elements get dirty then there is no cleaning them. Now this is the roumor of one man and I am sure that there are other good arguments to use them. Just passing a roumor no more. That said I purchased the Nikon 8700 just a few weeks ago. I have been taking tons a photos with it but have not mounted it to a heli yet. (I am about 4 weeks out from that) It takes amazing photos and I shoot in the RAW format for editing. It is all one unit and very light wieght. I bought the sun visor attchment from nikons web site. I am very happy with the camera so far. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them for you, just send me a PM.
I am sure that the Olympus is a wonderful camera also. If weight is a key factor I would go with the Nikon.
Steve

BTW: I ordered the digisnap as well.. hoping to see it any day now.. do I hear the door bell?

thanks for all of the info. I think I'm going to go with the Oly. Did you have a hard time setting it up?

The Olympus comes with a wireless remote, which I just trigger with a micro-servo, very simple. Whenever I get time I'm going to open the camera up and wire directly to the trigger. Enjoy your camera!

Shutter interfaces

If you are using olympus try checking into www.arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/equip/kaprig2.html

In Kite Aerial Photography there has been a few articles on where to buy an interface or how to make your own plug and go unit that plugs into your camera and allows you to sieze the chips protocol and focus, snap a picture and even turn the units on or off. I origonally though that it was going to be a soldering issue etc... turns out they use a programmed circuit that gives the shutter instructions. Origonally I was using the Canon Rebel because of the Weight of the camera and the electronic shutter release. I hacked the cable and wired in a switch. It fired of a picture ok but could not advance the film because of the lack of "Protocol" found in the chip it uses..

Use the search words....KAP or Kite Aerial Photography and read up, these professors etc.. have gone there time and time again. They also have schematics and lists of cameras the unit will work on. Id attach it for you but when I changed ideas I threw the papers out..
