Hello, my name is Tom Kudla and I have a Nexus that I bought. My radio is a Futaba Super Seven. I have a couple of questions... Right now the pitch of my blades is at 0 when at idle, and moves up at the same rate as the throttle, is this setup ok for a newbie or do I need to change it? The manual states to put the gyro in the back of the helicopter but I didn't have an extension cord at the time so I put it on top of the reciever(Just to run the engine), can I keep this setup or will it be benificial to put it in the back? I didn't balance the rotor blades, is it necessary? And when I move the throttle stick, the collective goes up as well as the rudder pitch, but the rudder rotor moves all they way, I don't think this is right is it? Thanks for the help,
Tom Kudla

Before I answer your questions, let me suggest you do one of two things... First would be to find a local heli pilot who can help you. I can not stress how helpful it is to have somone who knows what they are doing get you going. If you can not find anyone to help you, then my second suggestion is for you to buy "Rays Complete Helicopter Manual". This book will guide you step, by step and will be a huge help to you.

Now to your questions... Since you are a brand new pilot, we are not going to talk about 3D setups (no 3/4 stick hovering). For you, the low pitch setting should be 0 degrees. The middle stick position should have a pitch of 5 degrees. And the high stick should be 10 degrees.

Thy gyro is ok in the front or in the back. However, you do not want it on top of the receiver. This will cause the gyro to "wiggle" and you will get some feedback into the gyro/yaw. Also, that wiggle will probbably cause the gryo to break loose in flight. Then you will be in big trouble. I think you should just spend the $3 for a servo extention and mount the gyro in the back on the gyro platform.

YOU MUST BALANCE THE ROTOR BLADES!!! The cheap wood blades that come with the kit need to be balanced. If you do not balance them you can expect all kinds of shakes and vibrations. This is very bad since they will cause things to wear out and break.

When you move the pitch stick, you notice the rudder moves... That is because you have Revoulition Mixing (REVO) turned on. Depending on the type of gyro you have, you may or may not want this turned on. Since you do not state what kind of gyro you have, I can not give you a reccomendattion. However, if your rudder linkage is binding when you move the stick all the way up, you will want to lower the revo mix or turn it off. No matter what, you dont want your linkage binding.

I hope this helps.

PS - Why the hell did you buy a Nexus???

Nexus

I had to buy a Nexus because I have a low income... I work after school sometimes to support my hobby. I bought it crashed for 70 dollars, and bought used parts for another 70. Then I just bought the futaba heli flight pack and the Hobbico Peizo Gyro. I will mount the gyro in the back and get the extension. I do not have a blade balancer though... is there an easy way to do this without the balancer?
Thanks,
Tom Kudla

I was in your shoes.
The cheapest and easiest way to balance your main blade.
Screw those two blades together using one of the screws from the blade grips. Then hold with your finger. If you need to add weight on one of the blades. Use electric Tape, makesure you tape it just after the middle of the blade.
This is not the best way to do it, but it always works.

i am 15 and started flying january. i did the same thing you did when i started. i baught a raptor and the same gyro and some other stuff i wish i hadn't. that gyro is crap but you can use it. i learned on it but your next investment should definately be a new one. i got a gy401 but the gy240 will do fine. i would definately try to find someone arround there who has a heli and try to contact them and get them to cheak out your heli. i tried to build mine the first time and i made some mistakes that would have definately caused a crash. i would also buy G2 for your computer before you evin take off. is saved me hundreds!!!!!!!!!!! i am already doing flips, rolls, and loops but i wouldn't have gotten there without the help of big john who has been flying for years. try to find someone arround you who has done this before and made the mistakes that you WILL make.

I will offer you some help with the vast experience, that I have from my weeks of flying [that is 2 weeks]GET SOME HELP,now the reason I say that, is these things make great rotortillers,[I did not misspell that word either].

First thing GET SOME HELP

Second thing YOUR ON A BUDGET

Third thing GET SOME HELP

Get my point, after screwin with mine trying to set it up another member on this board said if you have to drive 5 hours to get help do,I still thought I could do it,found out after a bunch of wasted time that I could not looked on the local web site and found a picture of a guy holding his Viggy,e-mailed him and asked him if would like to help me get flying,he did not even hesitate we went out he helped me set it up and it was wrong he flew it trimmed it and now I am trying to learn to hover it.Now that is enough of a challenge with out trying to compensate for everything that is wrong. It goes against the better judgement of most men to ask for help!!! We cannot even ask for directions to get some where, so swallow your pride and get some help!!! Do I need to say it again!!!
