Hey, thanks, Jody!

Sounds like you have a pretty good niche there in the golf course arena. Do you do it locally or all over the country?

I went looking for the the videos that had all the combing and now I can't find the links, sorry!

I did check augusto's video server, but most videos there are also .ZIPed which makes it tough to browse through.

If I find a link, I'll post it here.

It's nice to see some pro's here. I always wanted to get into video work when I was a teenager. Someone talked me out of it as they told me that you really had to know someone to get in the business and the pay wasn't that good.

I got into computers and electronics instead (totally by accident). Now I still do not know anyone but at least I'm paying my bills!

I'd fly for anyone shooting videos if they need a pilot. But there isn't a lot being done in this area right now.

My current goal is to mix some of my interests (heli's, photography, video) and have some fun! Hmm.. how do I mix in SCUBA diving into that mix? Nevermind, I do not want to take my heli underwater!

Right now I do golf courses locally but my business plan is to be filming golf courses internationally within the next two years.

ImRich

Put your SCUBA gear away and pick up a set of golf clubs! There are more than 20,000 golf courses in the US and they love aerial fly overs of their course.

Jody,

Thanks for the tip!

But golf is much too slow and boring for me, why do you think I enjoy flying heli's? It keeps my mind busy!

No problem, in fact I have yet to find a heli pilot that plays golf. Their passion for the sport leaves very little time for another hobby. The first time my pilot sat foot on a golf course is when we filmed our first course over two years ago.

My business plan includes setting up a network of helicam operators that film golf courses. Professional videographers (especially wedding videographers) see the potential market but do not have the tool (helicam and pilot) to complete the job. Heli pilots have the skills and the tool but lack the vision to see the market.

You said you would fly for anyone that shoots video. My plan is to set you up with a videographer that needs your skills.

Hey you golf course guys,

We shot a golf course and thought about the "fly-over" thing but we're not really set up for video.

An affordable smooth video from tee-off to green would sell like hotcakes, but I was wondering how exactly you can accomplsh this unless you are able to fly the length of the hole in one flight?

.... or do you do several flights and try to piece them together?

have any of you been able to produce such a product without a ton of time invested?

You are correct about a tee to green fly over will sell like hotcakes. We filmed our first course over two years ago and it is still going strong. Here is a link to the opening video for the course.
http://www.olympiahillsgolf.com/video/opening.asx
Here is a link to their website that has all eighteen holes plus the driving range and clubhouse included.
http://www.olympiahillsgolf.com/

I built a cart that attaches to the back of the golf cart. The helicam sits on top of the cart and it carries everything we need to film and support the heli. We can film a par 3 in a single flight and for the par 4 and 5 holes we launch from the tee box fly half way and return. We load the heli on the cart, drive to the half way point and launch again to film the remaining part to the green. It takes about 3 hours to complete 9 holes. We don't film the entire course in one day. The first day we shoot the back 9 while the golfers are on the front nine. The following day the course has everyone tee off from the back nine while we film the front nine.

After I created the videos for their website I started receiving calls from all over the country from other courses that wanted us to film their course. Olympia Hills course is managed by Kemper Sports, they manage about eighty courses in the states. When one does something unique and it works they all want it.

See what a network of helicam operators could accomplish. Competition amoung helicam operators is not a problem, with 20,000 or more courses the market is huge!

Wow, that's excellent!

On a rainy day golfers could sit at thier computer all day and drool over that course!

The guy doing the blow by blow, is he like the course pro who tags a long with you to describe the course?

I think I found a reason to invest in video stuff. (I didn't need that much prodding)

After the aerial videos are done I start shooting the ground shots of the course including the voice over for the individual holes. I take my ground DV camcorder and along with the course pro go to each hole and he does the description. Then we go to the green and setup and he does the description of the green. On the holes that I did for Olympia Hills I would shorten the length of each vid by immediately taking off from the tee box and the voice over would be while in the fly over. That was the first course we did and I had many lessons learned.

How about sitting in your golf cart at a course you have never played before and while waiting to tee off, dial up the internet and watching the fly over of the hole that your are going to play on your video phone! That is about a year away from being possible.

ImRich;

Sorry, I didn't mean to change the subject of your thread. I just get so excited about what we could do if we combined our knowledge and resources.

That's pretty cool. Wireless internet is available around here, unfortunately it's expensive and only about 56k speeds.

That's why they can only send pictures right now. They should be at 384 within the next year.

Jody,

All I can say is "Show me the Money"!

As I mentioned, I'm into this for several reasons:

1) I have an interest in photography/video. I always have, but never in a serious professional level.

2) I already have some 'prosumer' grade camera equipment, both video and still.

3) I already have the heli (well more than one, but only one I would try to fly video/stills with).

4) I can already fly a heli.

5) I have an electronics/computer/radio background.

6) I already have experience with RF transmitters and sending video back from flying R/C aircraft. My first video was sent back from my aircraft almost 15 (or more?) years ago.

I figure this is a lot futher ahead than most people who consider doing heli video/photog, so why not, I'm almost a natural!

Heck, if I do golf courses, I can also bring my scuba gear and my Nikonos V and give them a view of what their ponds and water holes look like from below too! If those water hazzards were not so green and murky/mucky , I might actually consider that!

My business plan is actually ahead of pace. I have been working on this project now for 3 years and all the pieces are starting to fit together. Stay tuned!

I've done that!

I've filmed a golf course link. We did it by strapping me (the pilot) onto the back of a golf buggy ,where you put the bags, and 'chasing' the camcopter down the fairway.

It didn't come out too well as my camera operator allowed too much sky into the frame and shut down the iris so the image was pretty poor. We did manage to 'hit the green' though and landed right in front of the flag! Also the golf buggy (down hill and flat out) jumped about quite a bit and this transfered itself through my transmitter to the heli's flight.

A bit hairy to do as the course was open at the time so we had to go for the shot between playing golfers. Only did it to see how feasable it is to do which it is, but you do need the course closed off to all other users (obviously!).

Paul.

Forgot to mention that you can see a still image taken from the video on my website. It's the second from left, top row. I have never used or posted the video itself as it is too bad for words to describe!
