Got mine

I drove down to Heliworld/Century yesterday. Mainly for the 47G but needed some other stuff anyway.

When I asked for the Bell I was told they weren't ready yet because they were just unpacked from the crates.

Then, someone walked by carrying some stacks of paper and he said "oh it looks like some manuals are done. Let's see...". So, in several more minutes I walked out with the very first 47G they delivered! One of the guys even marked "#1" on the box and signed it. hehe.

Mine is pretty much ready to fly except for final gluing of the bubble, scale detail and the fins. Some thoughts, observations, tips, etc....

o The "ARF" kit comes with most of the sub-assemblies, assembled. ie: main rotor, tail, frames, washout. Not really quite ARF, but it's kinda nice to have a lot of those small things already done. Quality seems pretty good. Links are pre-made to the correct (well, hm...) lengths.

o The engine (mine is an OS .50) is kind of a pain to install. Is this endemic to all Hawks? I found it necessary to disassemble a bunch of the preassembled stuff on the frame to install it. Hope I don't have to remove the engine soon.

o Watch out for the flybar. There's a rightside-up with 2 notches in it. I'm not used to that and didn't realize it til later. I did my usual quick-fit and lightly turn the set screws until later balancing and locktiting. Turned out that just the light pressure on the screws scored the flybar enough so that it was damn HARD to move it thru the bearings again. Actually the 2 notches is a nice touch and makes centering easier than usual.

o I suspect that the lengths given for the swash to bell mixer linkage (106mm?) is too short. So far I've only eyeballed the pitch without the blades on but there seems to be a LOT of neg pitch and very little pos pitch at max collective throw. I made my links about 111mm until I can accurately measure pitch with blades on. I'd be interested to see if anyone else is getting the same.

o I didn't get the scale muffler & sideframes yet. I had to do some serious dremeling of my muffler (hatori I think) where it attaches at the motor in order to fit it in the frames.

All in all, a nice little kit for the money. I think it's going to be a nice flier.

edg;
Thanks for the update.
I missed the UPS guy, this was the first time that he did not leave it on my backyard. He'll back tomorrow. (I hope)
Anyway I can not wait to see mine.

I'll be giving it a test flight today
I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I'm now just down
to having to mount the doors, so I'm flying without them
today.

111mm for the linkages gives me a top end pitch of around
11deg. So I think those links have to be longer. If you go by the
manual your top will probably be only a few degs.

Interestingly, this kit is not really any bigger or heavier than my Hirobo .30 Lama (OS .32). With the .50 in there it'll probably be a rocket.

Finally I got mine ..
Wow... It's really looking good. Packaging well designed. Mechanic, head, tail boom and gearbox are already installed.
I spend 10 minutes already installing the engine and radios. How can I live without power screw driver !
With OS 46. This is going to be the fastest Bell 47 G in the world.
Anyway The bubble canopy looks good. I hope this is not as difficult as my Hirobo 47G canopy.
I love this bubble canopy.

I've been debugging some engine and drivetrain troubles and radio glitching. But, the few minutes I've had it in the air it went up into a rock-steady hover with very little trimming needed.

The bubble was pretty easy to glue in (and I suck at gluing stuff). Just make sure you follow the directions to put a bend in the bubble edges just above the doors

This is my first experience with Hawk Mechs and my opinion is mixed. On the one hand, it flies really well. On the other hand, the layout isn't that great. It's a real pain getting the engine in and out,

Yea. Make sure those bent around the edges. It made my life much easier. I used "Plumber's Goop". I got it from Home Depot. It's only $3.95. Boy this glue stick and fuelproof. It's also easy to apply it, and clean the excess with alcohol.
EDG. There is no question the Hawk Mech flies well. I have couple of them now, I had to agree with you, it's a little pain to take the engine off. But I kind get used to with that. I never took my engine out from my Hawk SE and Falcon. I made sure Fan, and Clutch installed properly. so you know you don't have to take the engine off.
Anyway I'm glad you like it, I will test mine today or tomorrow.

I'm just used to removing the muffler then the 4 mount bolts to attach/remove the engine.

In order to get my OS .50 in this, I had to remove several bolts from the frame, pull the frames down, remove fuel tank, and loosen up the gears on the shaft that is directly turned by the engine. It was during this last step while putting in the engine, that I apparently lost a crucial spacer that I did't know fell off. This caused the top pinion gear on the shaft to no longer be aligned with the flat of the shaft for the set screw. Consequently, after a minute or 2 headspeed it would slip completely. Trying to get access to this shaft to fix it was another pain.

I finally think it's all fixed. If it weren't for this and the glitching problems, it would have risen to a rock solid hover right off the bat. There's usually something to deal with on a brand new heli anyway...

I'm pretty much done with mine except for the decals. On the doors, you may find that the 2 magnets/door aren't enough to hold it (on mine, 1 side is OK, the other is too "springy" for 2 magnets). You can buy small rare earth magnets at Radio Shack for some extra hold.

BTW, this is my 3rd bubble canopy. I have a Vario .60 47G and Hirobo .30 Lama. Love the bubbles! My plan is to convert my other Vario pod&boom to a Lama so I'll have a big and small version each of the Lama and Bell 47.

It's Done. Ready to fly it tomorrow
I got everything done, except the doors. I had no problem buiding it, Nice... everything fits together very well.
First I thought the canopy was flimsy, but once I glued them together, oh boy.. it's so solid like a rock.
But make sure you follow the direction when you build the bubble canopy, it calls for bending the edges. I thought I could get away with this, at the end I spent more time and I finally bent those edges.. Voila.... so easy. Huh... I can kick myself.
Here you go again Century. Two thumbs up for you!

Did you find the glitch problem yet for your 47G?

Yes and no....

I'm still getting them.
But, I'm pretty sure I know why

The glitching seemed to only occur with the engine running.

At the moment I'm using a big fat Hatori muffler (I think it's Hatori, maybe not. One of those big cans...) While debugging at the field the muffler came off. One of the bolt holes in the muffler partially stripped. I thought that might have been the glitching cause. I tightened it up but still getting them.

Then I realized the outside part of the muffler where it attaches to the engine was right up against the metal sideframe.

I finally decided, rather than trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, to order the 47G muffler and sideframes. So, I'm waiting on that to arrive prior to more flying....

Got my glitch fixed. Turned out to be the screws. The selftap screws for the tailboom to the landing gears. I replaced four of them using hex 3mm 20 mm long.
Now no more glitch. I guess they were little loose.

Interesting. I'll keep that in mind in case I'm still glitching. You running PPM or PCM? What were your glitching symptoms like? ie motor running or not, tapping on the tail boom, etc....

I actually flew one tank and it ran OK. Then, after I filled it up, started the engine and it started glitching. It would settle a bit, then if I picked up the heli it would go through a bout of glitching. So, since it worked fine once it would seem to indicate something coming loose, and since it happened only with the engine running, it points to something that's likely engine related. So, I'm assuming the muffler is my problem now.

Oh, I started with a PPM Rx in it, then swapped in a PCM from another heli. I was getting lockouts while hovering, so the glitches are pretty bad.

Another thing I tried was running a ground wire from the tail boom to the sideframe, but that made no difference.

Just like yours, I flew it once, no problem. then it started glitching once a while, with engine running. then getting worse.
When the engine idle is okay, but when I just added a click, while my hand were still holding the head. The clitch started to come. All the servos just went nut. I changed the receiver(4 receivers All PPM), then use my pcm10 radios. Still happening. So This morning I started taking it apart. One by one while the engine was idling. that's how I found the problem. Boy took me three full days.
NOw it's working great even with my Hitec receiver PPM and JR PCM10

Well, could be I have the exact same problem. Couldn't hurt to replace the screws anyway.

What muffler are you using? I just got my sideframe+muffler, except no muffler. I guess they don't have them in yet. I suppose I could do a bunch of grinding to try and get my muffler to fit better....
