I am a newbie and I have a question concerning the run up stand used in Rays book. Obviously Ray is all for it and his reasons for justifying its use seem valid to me. Maybe not the safest thing in the world but then again standing in the same field with a machine with exposed blades that are running at 15k isn't exactly like wading in the shallow end with water wings either. I have also heard the opposition to the idea, imposed forces on the heli that are not the same as in the air, unloading of the system once airborne and all that. Is using a stand a viable option for those of us who don't have acces to experianced help nearby?

Run up stand

My flying bubby and I use a run up stand years ago that we built.
We has it set with a turn table so we could set the tail rotor mix in
with out the gyro on.
The stand was not that good for setting pitch, it was close.
Because the heli was tie down.
It is scary when your under the heli trying to set it up.
It will get you in the ball park.

I personally don't like the idea of getting under that heli as it applies all sorts of forces against a run-up stand. Even if you are just learning to hover, you can wind it up a safe distance from yourself without taking off and get enough adjustment to help you learn to hover. You can also set the high needle in idle up and not take off.

IMO I like to stay away when my heli's all wound up.
