I tried search and destroy but it does not seem to remove everything. S&D says my computer is clean but as soon as I open IE, pop-up start appearing. Obviously, it is wrong. I've read bad reports about webroot and Pest Patrol. Those are about the only 3 top software out there. What do you guys use and how reliable are they?

tried them

I've tried S&D and Ad-aware. I've got the Clientman spyware and none of them seem to detect it.

You have Adware not Spyware.. S&D takes care of Spyware not Adware.

Pop ups will appear if the page has them embedded within it(some ISP's have them on their homepage now)
unless you are using a seperate pop up blocker. In other words getting pop ups doesn't in itself mean you definately have a problem, but being directed to pages or a seperate ie browser windowslaunches with no action from you and after a webpage has already full loaded ,or having the home page altered, always does.

Adaware is CRAP!

i was running ad-aware and it found 6 instances of spyware, then my PC got flustered with crap and eventually hijacked by a trojan. The microsoft webpage directed me to www.pestpatrol.com and it found 490! yes, 490 instances of spyware and tracking cookies running. You might want to give it a try, 3 other friends have and are shocked to see how many ad-ware and spyware programs were running.

Clientman still there!!!

I tried pestpatrol. I have to purchase the software to get the thing out. How am I supposed to know if it works before I buy it. It might be just another Ad-aware. It detects Clientman, then deletes the files. I do a search right after the deletion and it detects it again.

It looks like I have to reformat my hard drive and start from scratch. The only problem is that there are a lot of files that I need to save and I'm not sure if those files are infected. If nothing can remove this Clientman thing, then I cannot trust my files anymore.

Any advise from you computer gurus out there!

AdAware is actually decent.

Pestparol finds a lot of stuff, but many things it finds isn't actually spyware/adware. It classifies many useful programs (like non-spyware p2p progs) as bad stuff. I wouldn't go deleteing everything pestpatrol finds, you might accidently delete something you wanted to keep. just a fyi

You can probably search for clientman on google, and i get there are relatively easy removal instructions. I'm not sure exactly what th eprog is.

If you know what you have, manually delete it. There are probably tutorials on how to do this on the internet. Deleting a file or two and some registry keys is usually about as bad as it gets, and it's free.

Clientman

I think this is what I have because it's the only consistent spyware that comes up when I do a scan with Ad-aware and webroot. Search & Destroy does not even see it. I did try to remove the spyware manually but I could not find the directories and files that are associated with this spyware.

I've thought of redoing the whole system from scratch but if nothing could take this thing out, what's to say that my important files won't have it when I place it back into the system.

I tried webroot last night to no avail. It detected Clientman and some other stuff but I have to buy it to actually remove them.

What to do . . . what to do....

Here's the fix all that will get rid of all spyware and ads everytime.

go to start, click run, type in command.com, then in the box that comes up type in format c: and hit enter. then hit "y" to the prompt.

congrats you've just made your pc spyware free.

format

Yooper1 - I did that format thing you said and now windows won't come up anymore. Did I do this right? I need to get all my important financial files out of this system before anything else happens. That format thing worked really quickly though, I selected the quick format option.

You can't format a partition Windows is on while Windows is using it. Duh. You have to boot directly to a command prompt or use a boot disk in 95/98. In Windows NT/2000/XP, a format on the active partition (C) can only be performed from Windows' setup.

Besides, if he was smart enough to use the /q switch, he probably knew what format would do.
