Those of us around full scale might know the answer to this... I have been told that if you mix 80octane with say 100low lead... the fuel will turn clear like Jet-A1 to indicate contamination... Where is the actually written at that this happens...???????

It's not. One of the major suppliers of 80 went from red, to pink, to clear, and that started this rumor. It's just the way some 80 was delivered for a while. After something of a commotion, it was colored again. Who knows. Seems to me this was about 4 years ago.

I think 82UL started out clear too. Maybe they pulled a fast one on us.

I can't answer your ? about avgas, but I DO know that up here at least, some diesel fuel is colored....the reason is to collect taxes, farmers and some industrial users get colored fuel and pay no taxes...the rest of us get it in the tank!!.......Maybe that's why it's colored there as well???........Governments.......

Ever notice that auto diesel has a color.??? Yellowish I believe right?? Been years since I have pumped the nasty stuff... Well, JET-A1 is clear. (diesel in my opinion) just a higher cut of kerosene... Now if you mix 90 with 100LL.... it too is supposed ot turn clear also.. Hey owen, have you ever tried this?? It makes sense that it would serve as an indication of contaminated fuel...

Diesel has all kinds of crap in it. Sulpher is probably making it yellow but I've seen green as well (probably the "premium" Diesel).

The Diesel fuel that is dyed red is for "off road" use only. There is a $10,000 federal fine (and maybe a state fine on top of that) if you are caught with that in an on road vehicle. The dyed fuel can be used for farming (NOT farmers driving to the ranch store - off road only as in TRACTOR), home heating, even boats or if you can manage it somehow, even in your vehicle when you drive in Mexico!!

On a side note: If any of you have a 1999 to 2003 Ford Powerstroke and you are experiencing the "cackle" problem, try finding the yellowest fuel you can. Stay away from "premium" Diesel. That should help if not solve it.

The club at Luv had some mixed. It looked like 2 cycle oil-mix outboard gas, kinda light purplish blue. It's just dye, it's not reactive. I've never mixed it personally. Never needed to.

I talked with one of the "fuels" folks at the base about this today. He said it's crap. They don't change colors. The jet fuel they have doesn't either. He said they sample it as it comes off the trucks. They spin it, looking for particulates, then send it to a lab for testing. He said you can't tell anything by color. Of two trucks, the fuels may look different just because of the refinery they came from.

This is what I thought... Total folklore.... and funny thing, I know a very large flight school owned by an airline that teaches the fuel turns clear when mixed.... hahahahhahah

Well I have seen Avtur/Jet A1 a lime green. Once in my army days (as a ground handler/when I was on excercise. We had a load of 44gallon drums delivered. Every one of them had green avtur. Was very pretty.

Here's a little bit of trivia for you. Diesel can be used as an emergency replacement for Jet A1. This was actaully tested by accident one time when again from drum stock we refueled a kiowa. Only thing is the engine requires an overhaul.

Don't ask me how we managed to get a drum of diesel in a batch of avtur and in the same colour drum.

Hey peter.... In my C-130 manuals.. (ex Flight Eng here) It lists tons of alternative fuels that can be used in the herk in times of emergencys///
Automotive gas, diesel, alcohol, any aviation fuel... I even heard before mexico would buy the planes, they wanted to see it run off tequila... (not sure if that one is true) but Chrysler built a turbine car in the 50's and they ran it off whiskey.. Why not?? It'll run on rubbing alcohol if needed.. Just cuts down the life expectancy on turbines, combuster cans and fuel nozzles....
