Is a header tank a must for mild aerobatics?

I don't think a header tank is a MUST at all. However, I always run one. Putting on a header will never hurt your set-up. I think all around, you get a more consistent run with the header, and for wild 3D, the header does keep the clunk covered with fuel. Also, from far away, with the header mounted on the side, you can see fuel. This allows you to run the main tank empty, and still maintain a "reserve".

Thank you for the info guys. I'm asking this question due to Sunday mornings crash. I was just doing stall turns when I lost power, this time it went in before I could save it. Do you think an air bubble in the fuel line could have caused this? The heli was in a nose down attitude when the engine sputtered. (fuel about 1/2 tank)

Thanks

Theres no way my clunk line could get fuel in a nose down attitude. I looked at several header tanks and settled with the T&T. Real nice.

I did not run a header tank for at least a year, and then only to get a bit more run time and to see my fuel level better. I was doing stall turns and such with no problems. If you figure that most of the time you are in nose down attitude you are not running the engine at full bore and the amount of time it takes for an air bubble to reach the engine from the tank I would figure you would have to be very high for it to sputter. I could be wrong here and if I am please say so. Did you change the stock fuel line to a heavier one than the one that came in the kit? I did not, against all the warnings. BUT, I do check it very frequently and change it at least once or twice a year. If you did, maybe it's not bending at all and if you didn't check it!

If you don't have a header tank, the clunk must be able to follow the fuel around. This is easy enough to check: you pick the model up and watch the clunk as you try various orientations.

If the pickup line comes from the front (e.g. Raptor), it's quite possible for the clunk to be out of the fuel in a nose-down attitude. Side-mounted pickups, like the Fury, are less prone to pick up bubbles since we mostly spend far less time with the heli on its side than nose or tail down.

Thanks again (this Forum is great). I have changed the inside fuel line
(the old one was aboul the size of a pencil lead when I changed it).The new line does not seem to let the fuel clunk move too freely, maybe this is the cause of my problems.

My next question: after the spectacle Sunday morning (post crash analysis) my clutch housing (and small gear) will barely turn on its bearing. I can see metal shavings near the bearing. Any easy fix besides splitting the frame??

the only reason i use a header tank is to see how much fuel is left. The ergo-30 does a great job in hiding the tank - only 2 small slots in front which are hard to see.

Header Tank

Not required, but as stated in several other posts: nice to see how much you have. I dont use a header tank any more (2 years or so) and do not have problems with any particular flight orientation. Nose down funnels do not cause a sputter.

An interesting thing I found a while back has to do with pressure lines and clunk failure. I used to have problems with my clunk line seperating near the back of the tank. At some point I added a fuel filter to the pressure line (OS61WC with hatori pipe) and viola... not more split clink lines. I guess that the filter absorbs some of the heat that used to be put on the clunk line. I also double up the tube where it meets the 'nipple'.

As for the frame question you can just remove the tail boom and most of the screws from one side. Remove the for and aft Collective arm from the same side and just pry open from the front until the clutch start shaft and both bearings fall out (engine removed) you can then remove the upper collar and remove and replace the bearings. It only takes about 30 min from start to finish.

I recommend a header tank.

Without it, make sure that the clunk will fall to the lowest point. KSJ and others make "heavy" clunks for this purpose. With Aerotrend medium tubing, that should work.

Even if your clunk works perfect, a header is not a bad idea. If and when a clunk tube cracks or if the clunk falls off you will see that the header fuel level drops while there is still fuel in the main tank. This is your indication that there is a problem. I know of no reason not to use a header tank, except perhaps for the larger gas guzzler machines that have problems flowing the fuel fast enough through all the nipples (orifices)
