I saw a belt drive tail conversion for the r-60 on this website.
http://www.m-pro.jp/beruto.htm
It would be better for someone like me who doesn't need every bit of performance from the tail, and the crash damage would be less hassle not having to deal with the torque tube and bearings. I've never destroyed a belt on My r-50.
I tried contacting the above website before to order stuff but apparently they don't read english. I think the conversion would be a good seller. Does anyone know if this conversion for the R-60 is availabale and I jsut haven't seen it?
Thanks

To tell you the truth this is the first time I have see it. But it looks cool wonder how it would work?

I would think it would work great just like on the Freya, only no bearing holders or torque tubes to break in a crash, only the boom.
I have heard of vibration problems from the plastic bearing holders in the boom not centering the bearings in the tailboom, this causes the tail drive shaft not run true and vibrate. The belt would eliminate this problem.

Belt vs. tube

Vince,

I have a Raptor 46 and I just completed rebuilding it after a crash where I lost my elevator servo (faulty 9202).

I lost the boom AND the belt, cut that sucker in half! It cost as much as a torque tube to replace.

Belt drive systems aren't as effecient as a torque tube. Ricks has replacement 60 size tubes for about $10.00, you can reuse the ends.

I haven't had any bearing problems with my R60 in the shaft. I think if you build it correctly there is won't be any issues. I do recommend drilling and pinning the torque tube ends on the Raptor 60 to prevent slippage.

The problem lies in the fact that some of the TT bearing holders do not have the bearings installed in the center of the bearing holder. That is what causes the problems. Additionally I personally have never had a boomstrike with a belt drive that destroyed the belt. Every boomstrike with a torque tube has resulted in the replacement of the Torque tube. So as I was saying in ''my'' scenario a belt drive would reduce the pucker factor even more. I have heard for years that a belt drive isn't as efficient as a TTube setup but I've never seen any proof of it. I believe that 98% of us couldn't tell the difference between the two. We are always caught up in that "gotta have the best" mentality. I get caught up in in myself from time to time.

Hmmm...
Wonder if that boom is the same dia. as the r50? I would like to install it on the r50 and use some 620mm blades. MAybe put some of that extra power to use!!
