Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > First Flight - Good! Second Day- Bad Boom Strike.

Well,
I finally finished my raptor30 and fired it up in my backyard on Saturday... Don't have too much room (lots of trees!), but I thought I would "get it light" on its rotopod. (thank God for the rotopod!) Anyway, on the first tank I had it hovering!!!! WHOOO HOOO! Awesome... Yea, its wasn't perfect but it was hovering..... Heck, I flew 3 tanks and each time it got a little better. Had a few close call/ hard landings but the rotopod did its job.... a couple of times I had it about about 8 - 10 feet up!.
(yea, I know too high for my experience level, but it felt much smoother up there!) G2 Flight sim made this a reality! Anyway, couldn't wait to fly it today. So, I went to an open flield, fired it up and took off. ( it was a little too windy for me and I should have known better, but anyway). I had it hovering but it kept climbing on me.... but I kept with it, then it started to get too close to the tree line ( starting to run out of room!) So, I said "Ease down" on the collective and let it settle to the ground.....
but it dropped a little to fast and a I had a BIG boom strike.... It tore the the boom right off!!! WOOO HOOO, my first crash!!!, I was sad. I think I got too confident. But, about $80.00 in parts it will be good as new :-). A question, I noticed this on my first day as well as today. When I just get off the ground and hover, no problem. But as it starts to climb say 8 - 10 feet up I want to ease it down, just incase but when I lower the collective (just it little, no I'm not chop sticking it!) It seems to come down too fast and usually takes a bounce on the rotopod!. How to you get the heli to "Settle" down. or is this a setup thing or just practice? Any suggestions to prevent a boom strike?

Thanks!

Hey Bob,

Im by far any expert (newbie myself) but it sounds to me like your pitch setting at low stick might be to much of a difference from quater to mid stick. At bottom stick, for hovering you want ZERO degrees of pitch. When i started hovering, I used 0 on the bottom, 6 at mid, and 9 on high.

It could be something totally different but this sounds like the problem to me. Hope you figure it out. Burn Fuel!

Good Luck,

It sounds like your pitch curve is a little too steep, when you cut the throttle/collective it drops rapidly. This could also mean you're running too much negative pitch on bottom and possibly too much on top as well. You don't need anymore than -2 for learning to hover and no more than +9 on top. Set the pitch and throttle so you hover a little above half stick.

I don't know how much pitch you have at low, mid and high stick or where your throttle is set but you can tweak the setup to make it fly better. Less pitch on bottom will let it come down slower.

Beginners tend to drop the stick too quickly until they get used to it. It is pretty commom to do. The Rotopod is a great learning tool keep it on until you're doing small circuits in front of you and you get used to the different orientations of the heli, tail, side and nose in.

Take your time and don't get ahead of yourself, a beginner usually gets into trouble when it gets up too high, keep it lower until you get a little more time in.

Have fun with it and don't let the early crash get to you, at least it didn't fly away!

I did the pretty much the same as you. First day hover, second day boom strike. There was 2 problems. One, my blades were not tight enough. Tighten them down fairly tight so they move but not easily.
I would not have a had a boom strike had it been for the that.

The second thing that screwed me up is the rotopod. I feel the rotopod is too high off the ground and makes flying HARDER. The heli bounces alot.

I went out of town and forgot my rotopod. So I made a stick and ball thing instead. I was really hesitant because I loved the rotopod and thought it helped me. I was wrong. With stick and balls I felt much more connected to the helicopter (probably because the balls are inline with the skids, not a foot below). And when the heli got close to the ground it would get in ground effect and not hit. With the rotopod you lose the ground effect and just bounce all over the place.

And of course check your pitch curves.
