Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Mounting Magnets in fan on Fury?

I am getting a GV1 for my Fury60 for my YS60. Should I upgrade to the X-Cell metal fan? Does the metal fan already have the holes predrilled for the magnets? I was told that the metal fan had 2 holes for the magnet and to put one up and one down to balance the fan.

You do not have to have the metal fan to mount the magnet. The magnet has one side that sends a signal through the gv-1 sensor and one side does not . test the magnets with the sensor and put a dot with a pen on the side that sends a signal through the sensor, before you glue the magnet in place. The metal fan that I bought did not have any holes drilled in it and they are tough to balance and balance you must or the heli will vibrate badly. Mounting one up and one down is so the sensor only picks up the active magnet. Maybe MA has drilled the holes , but I do not know this as true, so it's not hard to do if you follow the directions. Good Luck.

Same here, I just got a Extreme kit last week and it has the metal fan. No holes predrilled. The fan was way, way out of ballance. More than I would expect. It took eight 3/16" dimples drilled into one side to get it to ballance. I hope I got a bad one and they do not all come this way. It seemed like alot of material to remove. I used the high point balancer. I mounted just one magnet. The GV1 directions step you through finding the correct side of the magnet to use. Basically you just pass it by the sensor and see which side gives you a reading.

I used 30min epoxy to glue, and I am trying a technique used in dental fillings to hold it in. (I hear the magnets like to come loose). I drilled the hole to accomodate the magnet, then made a pocket larger in diameter under the magnet that forms a shape of a flask, (larger at the bottom, and skinnier at the top) if you know what I mean. Dentists use this to keep fillings from falling out. We will see how it works.

I ordered a metal fan and I will find out soon enough. I will let everyone know how it balances. Thanks for the info. The tapered hole sounds good.

Metal fans and the GV1

An alternative,

You can use an optical sensor and paint the bottom of the metal fan flat black except for a 1/2" strip to reflect the light from the sensor.

I've been using one for a few months now, no drilling or balancing problems and no magnets to fly away.

Best part is it only cost about 5 bucks to make one. Do a search here for optical sensor, it should find the threads with all the info you need.

If you can't find it, email me and I will dig it up for you.
