Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Carbon vs Aluminum

All,

I am a little confused at this point. It was my understanding that a carbon boom was both lighter and stiffer? However, I was reading Curtis Youngbloods book and he indicated that he prefers aluminum as it is more stronger. So, what is the truth??

Thanks,

Steven

you are right

yes, the original MA booms were not as stiff as the aluminium.

I found a regular carbon boom and put it on. The tail DID feel a little different. You could hold the frame and feel the flex in the boom.

Well, for $10 more than the std. boom, the hi-strength one feels much better. In fact it (to me), feels just as stiff as the aluminium one.

When I crashed one, I looked at the body, and I see why it is so stiff. The fibers run in 5 orientations, unlike the old one that was only 3 orientations.

I still keep an aluminium boom around for an unexpected crash (and which ones ARE expected). But, when I get the chance, I use the hi-strength booms.

do a comparison , your preference once you've tried both is up to you .. some flyers feel that carbon material has a interference problem, over the years I did not experience or have this problem .. some booms are thicker than others .. let us know .

The new MA carbon tailbooms are as stiff as the aluminum ones but are around half of the weight and the most expensive. The "standard" carbon ones are not as stiff as the aluminum but are the lightest of all of the booms and are a little less money. The "standard" carbon booms may flex more and cause the gyro gain to be run lower because of it but work great. The aluminum booms work very well and are a great choice if you need the weight toward the back or not concerned with overall weight and like the lowest cost of them all.

I think the advantage of cabon is that in a crash it will either break or return to its original possition. While aluminum can bend.

Just my 2 cents...
